Personally I wouldn't tell him unless for sure his father is going to die. In either case I would make sure that their relationship would be full of fun and love. Everyone is going to die, your son should be at the age he understands this.

Seeing death at ten was hard--a 6 year old won't be any easier. But the worst you can do is lie about it. You have to explain the process of life, how it starts, progresses and then comes to an end. We all will die and that is important. Kids are pretty smart nowadays--you better talk about it before the info comes from some idiot in the street. Go to clergy if you have one--explain what faith and prayer are. If the worst does happen, teach the tyke the value of honor and respect and the celebration of life as it was. Good luck during this horrible time

In the first place a six year old cannot conceive the thoughts of death, they don't understand death so, why are you so concerned with telling him that his father is going to die. By the time they're seven or eight they have the conception of death somewhat and can understand it to some point.

Whatever your trying to get across, your not doing a very good job of it. Let it go. Try again when the boy is older.

Sit him down and tell him that his father is sick. If your religious and have raised your son on it go with that approach...If not sit him down and just tell him that his father is sick...tell him the doctors don't know if they can fix him or not but they will try.
