my mom has smoked for almost 25 years and shes 40 now. She has just found out that shes had lupus for nine years. Could there be a possibility that this disease could be related to smoking?

The disease systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is not CAUSED by smoking, as it is an autoimmune inflammatory disease -- there are some strong genetic components, though sometimes it arises very spontaneously as well. The smoking probably exacerbates the condition, because smoking produces vasoconstriction, which is one of the main mechanisms of pathogenesis in SLE -- i.e. vascular spasm and progressive degeneration.

Smoking does not cause it, no. But smoking while you have it can make the symptoms of the disease worse. She should definitely quit. Her doctor can help her; people who have smoked for that long often need 2-3 tries before permanently quitting, and often do better if they get help from a doctor.
