GET RID OF THE DOG.

The problem is that your son and the rotty are both about the same age. The best thing is to actually have them in the same room together. This way they can get used to the presence of one another. However YOU are going to have to be right there supervising. I doubt your dog will suffocate your son...My ex's cousin had a young German Shepherd when my daughter was almost three, my daughter Loved to get into the dog's cage and being young, friendly and playful the dog welcomed the visitor, to the point of knocking her down and sitting on her face, and the entire time my daughter would be under the dog giggling like a lunatic. I suggest that at these times you speak calmly to the dog to "go easy" see the dog is at a point where toddlers get (you know they want to squeeze a pet so hard...), these two will grow up and be great pals if you let them, however YOU have to supervise very closely right now.

You cannot have the dog in the same room with the child on the floor, period. It's not safe. If the child is off the floor on a bed or sofa or in a high-chair that the dog won't knock over, fine.

Keep a door shut between the dog and your kids most of the time unless you are able to sit there and supervise.

The dog will calm down as he gets closer to 1 and 1/2 years old. If you have not had him neutered, it might help.

We have a large dog who can be wild too, but he's now neutered, which seems to be helping a little. Also, our kids are getting older (youngest 4 years old) and they rarely get knocked over anymore (but they usually play with the dog only if I'm in the room with them). As the dog and kids get older, I'm sure it will work out eventually.

Good luck.

While I am sure this is not what you want to hear..by asking this question I am sure you already know the answer...It is time to give the dog away. If you cannot find someone to take the dog until your child is old enough, then you may need to look for a permanent him somewhere else. Call your local humane society as they may have foster parents or people looking for dogs that need a good home. and you are right keeping a dog like this gated is not good for the dog and the dog is not good for your toddler. Good luck

1. You must monitor them and teach the dog not to sit on the childs face. It is not the dog's responsibility, but yours both to watch them at all times and to teach him what is alright and what not. A rotty needs training anyway, so find a good trainer who will also tell you how to teach him to stay away from the kid. If you don't train the dog properly now, don't come back saying that the rotty bit your kid or something in a year!

Are you kidding me? GET RID OF THE DOG!

Obviously, neither your dog or child are trained well enough to be around each other.

Your child's welfare is your number-one charge.

Call the SPCA and give your dog to a loving home where he can be properly trained and not locked up for hours on end.

Who do you love more? Your child or your dog. Keep the dog out of the house until your child gets older.

Someone needs to seriously take control of this situation and train the dog...in the meantime the dog & child shouldn't be in the same room.

Either train your dog or get rid of it. No animal is worth the life of a child.

I think your child's safety has to come first. Keep them seperated until your kids are old enough to defend themselves. Or let them be together only when extremely closely supervised.
