I had to learn a foreign language once on a survival basis -- they didn't speak english and I had to learn their language to live amongst them. So, I learned first the polite words: please, thank you, good morning, good bye, hello. Next I learned the phrase "I want". Next came nouns. Soon I could say things like "I want dinner" or "I want laundry". That won't work as a system to get you through school, but it works OK if you are dropped in a foreign country with no preparation.
