We are having a very low budget casual wedding in July. I want to splurge most of the budget on food, so that is taken care of...but to save cost, I thought I could indicate that the guests will "add to the decor" with their own lawn chair or blanket instead of renting chairs and tables...???

Update....there are picninc benches at the site, so eating shouldn't be a problem. The blankets and chairs are for the actual ceremony. Thanks for your input!

If I were invited to a Picnic wedding I would be flattered!!! It is a great idea and I don't think its improper AT ALL!!! I mean, many couples tell us how to dress in their wedding which normally implies spending hundreds of dollars in an outfit, how wrong could it be to tell their guests "Come dressed as you please, but bring a chair or blanket since we are going to celebrate it in the outdoors"????
Go for it!!! More people should follow your example.
I hope you have a wonderful wedding (which I am sure you will!) and a wonderful life together.
Good luck!!

Not improper at all. Just add a line to your invites that it's a picnic style reception and that guests are requested to bring their own blanket or lawn chair to sit on.
You may want to play it safe and have a few spare blankets or maybe disposable (or those cheap vinyl) tablecloths along, somebody ALWAYS forgets these things, even when the invite clearly states it.

Hmm... I have mixed feelings....
One I feel like, OK I understand you don't want to rent tables but as a guest.... I feel little turned off that I have to eat off a blanket or lawn chair.
Can you see how many tables and chairs you can collect from family and friends without stating to bring your own. It's just odd.... even at an outdoor bridal shower or normally gahtering you don't have to supply your own seat!!

that sounds really sweet...i hope the dress is also casual?
you might say on the invitation some information regarding this. picnic atmosphere, casual but appropriate dress,
bring your own beach chairs/blankets. (extra blankets will be provided)
suggestion? you might go around collecting these things ahead of time and deliver them to the wedding site.
happy nuptuals peace

You have to consider some things logically. You'll have great food, but it will probably be hard to eat and enjoy it sitting on a blanket or lawn chair with no tables.

I dont think its a problem at all. its not like your asking them to bring their own food or something like that. and eve nif they dont have a chair to bring (which alot of people do) they can scoop somne up for like $5 each. good luck! you wedding sounds really fun!

Not improper at all, I would think that would be totally appropriate considering the setting of your wedding.

its up to you to provide the chairs not your guests, if you asked them you might cheese them off. Blankets you could suggest they bring along
