I've been a Critical Care Paramedic for 10 years and these are some of the most asked questions:
1. What is the worst call you have ever been on?
-Bad wreck involving 2 cars, 8 people. 6 dead on arrival, 12 year old died on scene. One survivor.
2. Do you like what you do?
-Yes.
3. What is it like?
-Something new everyday. No 2 calls are exactly the same.
4. How did you decide to go into this field?
-I love helping people and have always been intrigued by health care and treatment.
5. Have you ever delivered a baby in the ambulance?
-Yes - 48 and counting...
6. What do you do when you aren't on a call?
-Sleep, read, finish paperwork, clean ambulance, study, etc.
7. How much do you make?
-Enough to live comfortably (At a private service, not a county)
8. Do you turn on your lights and sirens to get through traffic?
-Only if I have a patient whose condition could worsen.
9. Have you had sex in your ambulance?
-No, no and hell no.
10. Is it hard work?
-Absolutely. Mentally, physically, and emotionally.
Hope this helps!

I'd ask "Where do you work?". Then we'd hang around and chat for a bit. Most paramedics are pretty friendly and don't mind talking about their job.
Susan S: I don't know what the heck you mean by "is your command current". As far as direct contact with a physician, that's only done in unusual situations. We have a fair amount of latitude in our treatment, as long as we generally follow accepted protocols, and have a good reason if we need to deviate from them.

To start, ask: What helped you to decide to become a paramedic?
At the end, ask: What is the more frequent question you are asked?
To finish, ask: Is there another question I might ask you?

I would say first "Thank you"
Paramedics make crummy wages compared to what they do. Can you imagine what they are up against? Crime, dirty, smelly homes and people, blood born illnesses, needles, guns, knives, prostitutes, and the emotional trauma they see===victims of accidents, trauma. I think paramedics are one of the most underpaid professions. It makes me wonder about Americans==that value their athletes more than those who can save a life.
To answer you question==I'd say, what makes you stay a paramedic? Most say, "Cause I like my job"

I am an EMT and one night (really late one night), I was fueling up my ambulance. On my way inside to pay, some guy stopped me and asked me "Why did you become an EMT?" I told him simply that I have the ability and training to help others. He said "That's good...thank you for what you do."
He might not know it but he made my night. EMS is a thankless profession. It's so nice to hear a thank you once in a while.
So...to my fellow EMTs, firefighters, cops, medics and other public safety workers...thanks from me to you.

I would ask him "what's the grossest thing you've ever seen? And if that Paramedic were myself, now retired after 25 years, I would reply "a liquor store on every other corner in San Francisco". Put that in yer pipe and smoke it.

Is your command current? Are you in direct contact with a physician at all times? What are your latitudes in administering treatment?
