my dog had a real bad build up of mucus in his eye. so i went to the vet supply to see what they had. the 2 choices were a eye drop med with what im pretty sure was a steroid. it also said it helped reddness more then anything else, but it did say it also covered infections.my limited knowledge lead me to think a steroid would not really do much as an anti biotic, which i would think i would need instead of worrying if his eye was red or not. but the stuff i chose is making him not even be able to open his eyes.its making it worse .its a powder belive it or not.it says it can be put in the eyes or ears.its mainly for livestock.it says to spray a sufficient amount in the affected area. 2 - 3 x's a day for 5 to 7 days. it says it cures just about everything.each 100 g = acrilflavina 1.1 g
sulfatiazol 5.2 acido borico c.h.p.100
sulfanlamida 3.5 calomel 5.0

It contains sulfur so there is your antibiotic. It may not be the powder causing it to seem worse, this often happens with prescribed creams too and it's just a natural progression, it gets worse before it gets better. Try bathing the eye with warm salty water (a tspn of salt to 500mls of boiled cooled water) use a seperate cotton swab or cloth for each eye and wipe from the inside of the eye near the snout to the outside. If you don't see an improvement or it gets worse take him to a vet to get a diagnosis and treatment. I guess you know that left untreated, they can lose the eyes through bad infection... which is why you went to get something for it don't leave it go on too long.

If the drops your vet suggested contained a steroid, perhaps he was wanting to treat the dog for allergies rather than an infection.

putting a steroid in your dog's eye...well you need to consult your vet, as you may have just blinded or permanently damaged your dog's eye...I am a vet and cannot give you specific advice without physically examining your dog...but, as a vet I feel a commitment to educate... I did want you to know because I do not want your dog to suffer

if it doesnt get better very soon i would definitely take your dog to a good vet and let them handle it... they deal with these things every day...its what they do... i do not think diagnosing/treating this yourself is a great idea

go to vet immediately....mucous is a sign of infection or an infected ingrown lash or a foriegn object...his corneas may already be scratched
