As an adventure, its good. Generally, people are helpful and I feel its safe as long as you don't get into their matters. There are exceptions every where. Earlier, lots of adventurers have done it.
However, few tips- travel only day time, prepare mentally for any type of water, food and any place for rest. Move in groups. Keep communication open (about travel plans n movements) with your well wishers and police if necessary.

If you mean travelling between cities or the different states, I think it would be pretty risky nevertheless I will give you some small tips that may be of use to you.
- Travel by daylight. Be very sure of where you are going.
- Have a cell phone with you at all times, preferably one that allows roming. The cellular network works at most points on highways and is a good way to call for help if you ever require it. Remember to keep emergency telephone numbers in the cell phone.
- In many parts of India you may have a problem with communicating with locals if you dont speak their languages, so try and learn a few important phrases in the language of the place you are travelling through. Lonely Planet is helpful, carry one with you.
- If you cant stomache the local water, stick to bottled water. Its abundantly available everywhere.
- You will find most of Indians are very hospitable, but you may come across the odd one who may not be very savoury, so be ready for a big adventure.
- In some parts of the North East (Assam, Tripura etc.) it may be dangerous travelling alone by bycycle due to insurgency. You will come across many police and army patrols who may pick you up for questioning or simply for your own protection.
- In some parts of Bihar, Utttar Pradesh, I believe dacoits still do exist in placès like the Chambal Valley. beware of going thorough such places by yourself, travelling by night may be an exhilliariating experience but could also be bad for your life.
- Be prepared for a lot of dust, vehicular smoke, and noise while on the highways, and great people, great food, scenic beauty and deep serenity off the highways.
- Be prepared to take in the most breath taking views ever.
- Be prepared to meet the most unusual people and sights, things you may never experience in any other parts of the world.
- India was always a land sought out by the greatest adventurers from Europe to Mongolia and from Persia to Africa, who came, conquered and stayed behind.
- Remember whenever you travel in India, I am sure like else where in the world, the sum of the good and bad experiences will be determined by you as an individual. For the many great travellers who passed through India in the past thousands of years, this has been hugely positive. Perhaps thats why they are regarded as great travellers.
- And yes, be prepared to undergo one of the most exciting, thrilling, and bizzare experience of your life. That is if you have the courage, will to go on and determination to survive the ups and downs, you could one day pen a great story and make Millions.
