I was with my cousin and some of her family shopping today. We asked her grandma how so-in-so was doing, and her grandma told us about the last time she saw the girl. She explained that her little boy (who is mixed) got in trouble for telling his mom "I'm just a little n-word." We laughed that a 2 yr old said that & that his mom (who is white) about had a heartattack for him saying it. Her grandma wasn't being loud at all, but a black lady heard us as she walked by. I noticed that she seemed to be lingering by us. She said under her breath, "I wouldn't repeat that joke." No one else heard her but me. After 10 minutes of us walking around the lady came up to us & went off, saying she was offended & she called us rednecks. I apologized & tried to explain to her what happened. I felt bad for offending her, but she wouldn't listen & she made a scene like we had called her that! Obviously we can't censor everything an old lady says. What can u do 2 fix something like that?

Everybody knows 2 year olds are like little sponges and mimic what they hear. I would question as to why the boy said this and where he got it from.
You were talking about the kid getting in trouble. But this women tracks you and goes off? So this women followed you and called you rednecks...... sounds racist to me. This women obviously has that African American chip on her shoulder. The one that blames everything on racism. Is this racist? No, its observing a cultural thing. I have friends from Africa and black British friends that have visited me in thne US. They independantly asked what was up with african americans.
It amazes me regardless of how some people are. So she is the race police? There is nothing to fix as she was in the wrong. The fact that you tried to explain (not say as a stupid redneck) and that you have given this some thought says a lot for you. Just chalk it up as that there are stupid people of any color who have no conception as to how to behave.

Nothing at all except, the fact that you were sorry she felt that way. Some people are just waiting to pass judgement on others and God forbid you say something in return. The fact that she called you rednecks shows that she has a problem with race. Dont worry about it. People should mind their own business and stop looking for a fight with others when right now there are more important things on this world to really worry about.
Good luck

Sounds like she's the one who's racist. You were kind to have apologized for offending her, although she should have been the one to apologize for butting into your conversation. There's not much more you can do about it. Some people just have issues and the slightest thing can set them off to the point where they'd go off on a perfect stranger in public. It's unfortunate that you and your family had to be the object of this one woman's attack.

If someone gets offended about a story of what a 2-yearold said, and doesn't want to listen to your explanation, then don't worry about it, not your fault. Some people just go through life trying to find others to yell and scream at.

If she was in any mood to listen, you could have told her that she should NOT call you racist until she heard the entire story. Apparently this woman just wanted to take offense without knowing what she was talking about.

Useless to answer her. She is definitely a racist as well. The boy's comment came from adults around him. The adults around him are racists as well otherwise they won't comment like that.
Moral: Be careful of your comment around children. They tend to repeat what they have heard.

Yeah, I think F-off and mind your own business in a loud voice would have been appropriate. Even PC allows people some privacy I think. We cannot allow ourselves (any of us) to be dominated by others.

You ran into an Injustice collector, looking for reasons to be offended, then crying victim. ...That is the product of minority status, instead of Human status. The term minority means apart from the rest, which is demeaning in itself.

You really can't. I turned to glare at someone who said the "n-word". Turns out they were black. Now I'm not entirely sure why if the word is soooo offencive and so negative, why are they keeping it alive and making it cool? It's one of those oxymoron things.
But if you are white, you can't use the word at all. Period.
