No, that is just an excuse..The Great Danes in the UK are doing just fine!
Here is the website of perhaps the best (most experienced) Dane breeder in USA...She does have her show dogs cropped, (says she doesn't want to) but will happily leave the others uncropped. http://www.greatdanelady.com/
All Dane lovers will enjoy her website!

That is ridiculous. Ear cropping is purely cosmetic, and doesn't stop dogs from getting ear infections. I've never had a cropped Dane in all the 30 years I've had Danes, and I've never had an ear infection either.
Cropping is painful, unnecessary and expensive. And a terrific amount of work to get the ears to stand. If the crop fails, due to soft cartiledge or lack of caring for the taping, the dog is left with mutilated ears and a ruined appearance.
It is banned in all European countries, and the US is one of the few places where it is still allowed. The trend is to not crop, and it is no longer being taught in vet schools. Also many natural eared Danes are now taking championships in shows, so there is no need to crop for show purposes.

Natural ears don't get infected any more often then cropped ears. In answer to your question no not all Danes should be cropped.
I have both cropped and natural eared Danes. My current show boy is natural eared.
The Great Dane lady has wonderful info however a lot of things on her site are now outdated. There is no reason to have a show Dane cropped...many natural Danes are winning regularly in the ring and have their championship.

I think the short answer to this is NO!
The 'infection' that some dogs with long ears get (including spaniels, beagles, etc.) is easily prevented by cleaning regularly.
The real reason that dogs are mutilated (and this is a mutilation) is for the owner's vanity, because they 'like the look'.
This used to happen in the UK with various breeds, who had their tails docked. Not for any health reason, but because they were 'expected' to look like that for 'show' purposes. Thankfully this practice has now been banned. Hopefully this will happen with all types of mutilation.
If you have a Great Dane, his ears came out the way they did because that's how they were intended to be. Don't chop them up, please.
To finish by answering your question again...
...no! all Great Danes should NOT have their ears cropped.

Many studies have been done in that regard.... none of them found any correlation whatsoever between cropped ears and infection...
what they did find, is that if a cropped ear does get an infection, the constant care and treatment of the ear may cause the ear to not stand erect anymore. Even less if the ear needs surgery.

Danes with their natural ears look the best anyway!!! I think docking ears and tails is soon to become taboo. People are becoming far too in tuned to their dogs to let such blasphemy continue. There are many breeds where it ISN'T the show standard to have the ears docked (I own a Dachshund which is one of these breeds) and regular cleaning and care is key to prevent infections, whether the ears are short or long. Keep them long and enjoy them!!!

There is no medical justification for cropping any dogs ears!! It is a purely cosmetic procedure dating back to ancient Egypt. Dogs ears get infected, regardless of cropping, there is no medical proof that cropping prevents ear infections. I have a floppy eared dog who has never had an infection

Cropping is considered, cosmetic surgery, and from what I understand is incredibly painful for the dog, and really unnecessary to do. If it was my Dane, I wouldn't have the heart, to put him/her through that pain.

this is not true..as with all ears.. proper and routine care is key...all ears can get infections...cropping the ears is purely a cosmetic procedure...a lot of U.S. vets will not perform the procedure and many feel it is cruel...it is however a personal decision..you will be the caregiver of the dog...would you allow your child to have safe cosmetic surgery not to benefit their health?? God Bless!
