Rickets is the name of the disease in children, while osteomalacia is the name of the same disease in adults. However, they are both caused by vitamin D deficiency -- thus, prevention of Rickets is based on adequate vitamin D levels.
There are 2 sources of vitamin D: synthesis in the skin, and diet. For synthesis in the skin, adequate sunlight exposure is important, as it is the main catalyst. For dietary intake, vitamin D is found in many foods, particularly mushroom and plant foods -- so, adequate nourishment is important for that method of vitamin D acquisition.

It's a lack of vitamin D. You should drink milk with vitamin D, get out into the sun once in awhile, and maybe consider a multivitamin supplement.

talk to your doctor but I think getting enough of all your vitamins helps. Take a multivitamin everyday... but talk to your doc before you start!
