The US hasn't had a "civil war". A civil war is when two factions fight for control of a single government. The American "civil war" was about state's rights. About 80% of what you think of as government (Federal Law) is actually supposed to be controlled by your state. Our constitution was written to control and limit the powers of our government, not the people. I know this doesn't really answer your question but before you ask what happened in the civil war, you should ask what brought it about.
