Im going in April to Hawaii and thinking about buying a portable grill and BBQing on the beach on the sand is it against park rules ? or is it ok to do so? or depends what beach?

Yes you can! A lot of them even have built-in grills that you can use, but sometimes it requires you to rent the area or pavilion... I think in Waikiki beach the have different rules due to the number of people that visit the beach daily and the fact that it's not that big of an area...

A barbecue directly on the beach is illegal in Maui, but they have many designated areas to barbecue, and yes, you can use your portable in these designated areas. These areas ae close to the beach so you are direct oceanfront when cooking, and you are legal, No Problem.Cooking on the sand, on a windy day is not too much fun, unless you like a little sand to go with the food. The designated areas, are grass, and you do not have the sand problem. Happy Grilling.

As long as you use a BBQ grill you should be fine and legal. Do not under any circumstance make a hole in the ground or bury your coals under the sand however as the sand will incubate the coals and potentially cause a harmful hot spot under the sand which won't go out.
Watch the posted signs, they'll tell you what you can and cannot do......

Honolulu has much more rules than the other islands. My family and I have BBQed in Honolulu at a few beaches. I'm from Kauai and we do it here all the time.
