Actually, any of the mattress shops should have diagrams of the various mattresses and in many cases cut away models and will cheerfully explain why this $1700 mattress is so much more wonderful than this other $400 mattress. It is mostly a case of how long a warranty they are willing to give, how thick the padding is on top, and how much work they do in arranging the springs.
I personally like a medium dense low cost foam mattress with a $80 Temperpedic topper and a $40 padded mattress cover both from J.C.Penney.
