He is the Archbishop Emertius of Cape Town,
Primate of the Church of the Province of Southern Africa. His beliefs and his faith in God lead him to support a Free Africa, World Peace, etc. He even went against the Angelican norm to support gay and lesbian Angelicans tha god loves all of us. As for purpose and meaning of what he did hopefully it was to help his fellow man with the help of God

Maybe

Maybe all men are created equal.

Maybe all the things MLK and gandi preached about.

I think more than anything, I think he felt the suffering of his people.
