my native language is espanol, but i was never taught it as a child. i knew some words & phrases that my family often said, but that was about it. i took it upon myself to learn the language when i went to high skool. i took it for 3 years & even started integrating it into my life. i think i've come a long way, however, when applying for a job is it fair to say that i am bilingual? i sumtymes struggle to find the meanings to words, although i understand it quite well when it is spoken to me. i will continue to learn spanish, but as of now, r there any online tests of some sort that will test my knowledge/accuracy of the language?

I believe there is a standardized test for each language. You should look into taking the Spanish Language Proficency Test or equivalent.

Usually these kinds of test tell you when you decide on which level to take, if you qualify for "fluency".

Verbal fluency and literary fluency are a long ways apart. So you should look to take a standardized test to see where you stand.

If you only knew a few words and phrases of espanol, then English is your first language. It sounds though as if you now know enough Spanish to be considered bilingual. You might be able to test it at an employment agency looking for bilingual employees.

I would tell an employer that you can speak the language fairly well and that you understand it better than you speak it. Suggest that you are happy to be tested by someone to determine your proficiency.

Ask at your state employment office if there is a standard test for language proficiency.

If you can understand a second language and you can make someone understand you, then you are bi-lingual. In most jobs it isn't important to be fluent in the language to be considered bi-lingual (unless you are applying for a position as a linguist). You would probably qualify as bi-lingual, but if you aren't sure, add the word "partially" in parentheses on the application and then explain in your interview what you wrote here.

Unless you speak it fluently, I wouldn't claim it. Someone at a job may expect you to know it, and if you don't, you will just end up looking bad.

It's a question of proficiency only. Definitely you are bilingual.
