I bet you can start working there AND start going to college at the same time. When I was in a community college, I remember there was a police academy too. Your GED will get you into a community college, and you won't have to pass the tests to get in; the admission is automatic for all. Definitely ask in the police department how you can advance your education to get a job, is there any programs in the community colleges. You can always automatically transfer to 4-year university after completing the community college, and in 2 more years, get a 4-year degree. Do it now, while you are 21 years old, but it is never too late to start doing it.

Most departments across the US hire college grads. You would be better off getting another type of job and going to college then applying a couple of years down the road at a police department. They look for criminal justice degrees.

First, there is nothing easy about Law Enforcement. Second, L.A.P.D. is the toughest academy in the field. I know, my ex-wife blew out her knee trying to make it there. She had the academics licked, but the physical training is just as important.

Apply to L.A.P.D. if you don't make it, take some Administration of Justice classes at a community college and try again in two years. Don't give up on your dream.
