I want to be well informed on what I would be taking for my shoulder surgery pain. Vicodin 5/500 mg isn't working anymore and I only take 1 tablet every 6 hrs. The pain has gotten worse. What pain meds will the dr. give me and what are the side effects of the new meds please ? Thank you.

If Vicodin isn't working, Darvocet isn't going to be of any use to you. There are many different types of medication out there for pain; as for what your doctor will give you, it depends on the doctor. Oxycodone has always worked best for me. My regular meds for my chronic pain are OxyContin and Oxy IR. It's also the same medicine as Percocet.

I had rotator cuff surgery a couple of years ago and after being in the hospital for 1 day on morphine IV they released me with a prescription for Percocet......1-2 tablets every 6 hours. That worked fine and in 2 weeks I didn't need it any longer.

As they are similar opiates the side effect profile is similar. Vicodin never did anything for me either when I had it for 6 broken ribs.

Well there are a lot of different meds, but you really need to talk to you doctor the next time you go. Well if you the Vicodin doesn't work, then maybe Darvocet? It works differently for different people. Or Percacet is choice, but be warned;that stuff makes you loopy as all get out. Darvocet makes you out of it. I had surgery on both my knees and had Vicodin once and Darvocet the other time and while in the hospital I had morphine and Percacet.

I can't really say what pain meds you might need or what the doctor might give you. What I do want to advise though is that no matter how bad your pain is, don't start taking more and more of the Vicodin or any other narcotic medication that your doctor gives you. Without so much as you being aware of it, your body WILL very quickly get addicted to it and require higher and higher doses. Please be very careful as this is exactly how people end up getting addicted to painkillers. It is an epidemic and a very serious and difficult addiction to beat. I wish you luck and hope you feel better soon.

I always have had good luck with Darvocet. Vicodin never works for me. Ask the doctor is Darvocet might work better for the pain you are having.
