I dunno which is better, but I leave mine on all night and it's been running perfectly for four years now. So no complaints there.

It depends somewhat on what type of computer you have and what OS it's running. If you're running any variation of Windows 95 or 98, I'd highly suggest rebooting at least once a day (which means it'd be simpler just to turn it off when you're at work or sleeping). If you're running ME, get a different OS. For XP, set your computer to turn off the hard-drives after a few minutes of inactivity, turn off the monitor when it's not in use (or close the lid if it's a laptop without a secondary monitor attached), and you should be good for at least a week. Just keep in mind that you probably don't want to leave an active internet connection running 24/7. If it's a closed laptop, or a desktop that's in Sleep mode, the internet connection won't be active even though the computer is still turned on. If it's a desktop that's not in Sleep mode or turned off, be sure to disable the internet connection when you're not using it.
Also, to prevent damage from lightning or power surges when you're not home, get a decent UPS or surge protector, and make sure that everything that's plugged into the computer (including phone and coaxial TV cable) is either run through the UPS/surge protector with the computer, or is only plugged into the computer (like headphones, passive speakers, or USB-powered devices), because any wire that connects the computer to something that is plugged directly into the wall can be a potential source of electrical power surge that could be trapped on the wrong side of the surge protection circuit, where it will actually be prevented from grounding out.

depnds--if you want your computer to last longer or play harder
last longer-in general a computer will last longer if left on because the harddrive doest spin up and the processor doesnt get logged but ram can slow the computer down a bit.
wastes a little more money, but mainly the only issue is overheating-and if worried about that shut your computer off every 3 or 4 days for like 1 hour
play harder--turn the thing off it doesnt overheat and gives u execllent use everytime- cons are that powering up stresses harddrive life ecspecially in older computers and when loading ure os ram and processor are cluddered also leading to loss of life. example is that me and my friends made a 2500 dollar comp and threw our old 2 gig hd in thr along with my 750 threw xp on 2 gig it was resarting and thr was a (noticable) surge-spark on the hd board caused by spinning up--totally fried a very expensive comp--thnk god for warrenties

Personally, I leave my computer on at all times, mostly because I am lazy =P, but I don't see the harm in it unless of course there is a storm going on and you don't want to risk frying it. My point is since computers have a sleep option I don't see why you need to shutdown every night but occasionally it might be a good idea

I leave mine on.
I turn off the monitor, because we learned in electronics class that the monitor accounts for nearly 50% of the total electricity usage of the computer, but yeah... I leave it on.
Check out my sources for a detailed article on the subject.

quite in hibernation, it shuts down a working laptop or laptop like once you turn it off. the version is that it saves its modern consultation to the demanding stress, so as that it will resume once you turn it back on.

just put it into standby mode, new computers nowadays barely use any energy in standby mode, and its better than turning it off unless you wont be using for days, but if its just overnight than standby is better.
