Put the pup up to moms teat. Not only does the pup need the milk to survive but the mom should of already cleaned the pup and while the pup is nursing the pup is also getting body heat from the mom that the pup needs to survive.

a puppy's first instinct is to latch on and nurse , it should get it's mothers milk within 24 hours or it will end up dehydrated and hypoglycemic, try to open it's mouth and place it on the mothers tit and make sure it can get a grip on a rough but soft surface because if it can't get a grip it can't hold on for very long if it just refuses to nurse at your local pet store there is a formula called mothers milk , bottle feed

Hi Tiffany.
You may assist pups in finding teats to nurse on if they appear to be having trouble – they need to get the "first milk" (colostrum).
If your mothers show no interest in their new litter or even to certain pups within a litter. If these pups fail to receive colostrum they will lose valuable nutrients and may compromise their immune system. These pups tend to do poorly or even die. Commercial formulas are available for hand-rearing or supplementing pups. Weigh these pups frequently so that they receive the proper amount of milk. When I had puppies I had to put the puppy up to the mother's nipple and if you slightly squeeze the nipple for some milk to come out; open the puppies mouth and put it on the nipple. The puppy should taste it and start sucking for some more right away.

it should suck by itself try hold it up to the teat and see if it will latch on by itself. if the mother hasnt cleaned it then she knows something is wrong with the puppy. we had several ltters and the one time the mother had a ltter and wouldnt even clean the puppy and we tried feeding it and tried holding it to her but she kept growling and pushing it away she knew something was wrong with it when it got a week older she left it in the cage and didnt even pay any attention to it we ended up bottle feeding it but it died anyway didnt get its mothers first milk; hope you got it feeding .

If the mother has already cleaned it it should be ready to suckle, but give it a little time before you panic. Just lay it next to her so it will stay warm.

They will begin to suck soon after they are born but if she is still delivering, she may be busy. The main thing is keep the pups warm until she is finished with her labor.Maybe help her with keeping them warm and she will let them suck soon after.Good Luck!!!!!
