I have been running since last June. i am very dedicated and have gone fromgasping for my last breath at 1/2 mile to running 6 miles now. I have been fairly pain and injury free until lately. I have had some minor shin splints but i can usually run that off after the first mile. My concern now is moderate pain in my left heal especially in the part that runs up the back of my left heal. It is more noticeable after a run and not so much during. Any ever experience this?

First, congratulations on your accomplishments! The best thing about starting out with running is that as you increase your miles, each new additional mile is a "personal best". I wish you the best in your continued success.

As for your heel problem, you mentioned pain in the back if your left heel. Further, this pain comes only after running, not during. The information you gave me are the classic symptoms of the early stages of Achilles Tendonitis.

In the mildest case, all that is needed is rest for about a week or so. If the pain occurs again after a short run, you should consult a (sports) doctor to get a better idea of what is going on. If it goes untreated, you will not be able to run from the persisting pain, even when you run.

On a final note, I noticed that others thought that you may have heel spurs. I am not sure what they are basing this on because the pain from heel spurs are located more closer to the front of the heel, and it is continuous. In fact, you will definitely feel the pain from heel spurs when you run. That is clearly not what you described. If you doubt me (and you should), do a google search on both conditions to see which matches up with your symptoms best. WebMD is another great resource.

Good luck.

I would have a Dr. check it out. if you are referring the the part that is about 1-2 inches above the heel bone it could be the Achilles tendon. I ignored it as it did not hurt except for the first mile or so while running and then it stopped me dead in my tracks. the Achilles can pull or worse rupture which requires surgery to repair and once you do that its a long road to recovery for running if at all. I was lucky it turned out to be Achilles tendinitis, but it is still going to be several months before I back to running. google Achilles Tendon, you can treat yourself to a certain point, but if is is serious enough it wont heal. The Achilles Tendon does not give a lot of warning before it goes from mild soreness during running, to disabling you from running at all.

Go get this checked out as it may be the beginning of a much worse problem. You may have to take some time off from running to let your injury heal. Take your workouts to an eliptical machine or something else with low impact. After so much stress is put on your legs with all that distance running, some sort of small injuries are unavoidable. Just do not let it get out of hand.
