Whole spices last about a year, ground about 6 months. They wont make you sick or anything its just that they lose a lot of their flavor after a while.

Several years is a long spell, yet give it a try before tossing out,two years can be considered good enough for spices.Powdered spices loose their potency & spicy accent more readily than whole spices . Test a bit of whole spice for flavour & aroma,if this is retained then it is good for use, powdered spices are best discarded ,i think it would be a watse of other good ingredients trying to use a less than perfect spice.

The shelf life for open spices is 2 years, but idealy one year. Since yours has not been open it should be a little longer, but if it has been past 5 years, I would pitch it. Otherwise, you can check to see if it is good, just make something that requires that spice, use the amount needed. If it taste funny, not strong enough or just not normal, pitch it.

It would have lost all it's fragrance by now. Too long a time to store spices. If you were to cook a dish, it wouldn't the same as compared to using new spices. Discard it.
