Do you need a license to fish on a lake or river, or is it just on a boat? I've been hearing different things lately. I would like to go fishing at a local river; will i need a license for this? If so, where would i get one, and about how much do they cost? thanks~

You need a fishing license if you plan to fish any body of water except for private property with the exception that if they charge people for fishing it becomes public and then a license is required.
The cost for a license is $9.00
You can purchase it at most bait shops, Wallmart and Hutning stores.

The best and easiest place to get a fishing license is at a sporting goods store like Gander Mountain, Dick's Sporting Goods, etc. Even Wal-Mart sells licenses in their sporting goods departments. And if you've ever passed by any place that advertised they sold live bait, then it's good chance they'll sell a license to you too. So check out the place where you get your fishing gear. But call first. I've shown up at places where their electronic licensing was offline for the day, and sometimes an entire state's system can go down and no one can issue new licenses.
Price depends on your state. Residents of the state usually pay $16 to $20 bucks for the season. Out of state visitors are saddled with a as much as a $40.00 fee for a license. Go online and search the fees required by your state.
Just remember the sunscreen, bug repellent, and H2O. And have fun.

You need a fishing license whenever you're fishing in public waters, whether it's from the shore or from a boat. Depending on where you live there may be some exceptions. In my state (NC) you can fish in public waters with live bait in the county you live in. Fishing in private waters such as farm ponds do not require a fishing license. You can get a fishing license at bait and tackle stores in most states.

I don't know what State you are from, and each one differs alot. My State requires you to purchase a license prior to going, or you may buy a day license on the day you fish. Sporting goods stores and tackle shops have them. I buy a yearly license, as I love to fish, both fresh and salt water. It cost me $42.50 for this year. Enjoy your trip!!!!!

each state in the US has different laws and age groups...license prices ....go to the local hunt/fish shop...or a walmart...any place that sales license has to have a copy of the laws for you to read....good luck and good fishing...

Most BMV/DMV's deal with fishing license. Normally only a few dollars, like $12 at most I think. Your local bureau of motor vehicles will know or at least direct you to that department.
