I dont think there is anything wrong with a 14 year old having a permit. They cannot drive alone, they must have an adult 21 and older in the front seat with them. I think the real question is allowing 16 year olds to drive vehicles by themselves. I think they should be on permit until 17 or 18. And I dont think they should be allowed to have passengers under 18. Too many accidents occur from youth having distractions like friends in the car or talking with a cell phone.
The driving permit isn't the problem because they have to have an adult riding with them. Besides, a permit is to show them HOW to drive. But I think 16 is too young to have a license.

I did. I got my actual license at 16 but I was well behaved and didn't do the stupid or rediculous behind the wheel.
My parents could trust me. I wasn't wild and was very responsible for my age.
It depends on the child whether they are mature enough to be trusted behind the wheel of the car.
I never drove around with a bunch of my friends in the car. That's where my parents drew the line and they might have been right.
Teens get too easily distracted by their friends and lose their concentration on their driving.
I just read some of the other answers. They make a good point that I failed to mention. We were living in an almost rural area. It was a very tiny town. Little traffic and only 2 stoplights. So, it was ok for me to have a learning permit at 14.

Unless they can prove they are disciplined enough to not cause trouble and unnecessary accidents, no. In fact, that goes with every driver out there. I've seen an elderly man drive his car on the LEFT side of the road, then cut to the RIGHT side, and this is the United States! Ok, he's over 16-he's allowed to drive. But is he safe? He probably hasn't taken a driving test in decades, and it definately shows. If the 14-year-old can show that he or she can learn the rules of the road, drive safely, and not create chaos on the roads, go ahead. But who's to determine whether they are or not?

I think 15 & 1/2 is a good age for their permit, 16 to drive them selves, as long as they are responsible. I do however think that children should learn to drive as soon as they can see over the wheel and run the pedals too. I had my ex girlfriends daughter driving my full size 84 Chevy truck when she was 11 & 1/2, she was useing the clutch, shifting gears and driving as far as 25 miles away on dirt country roads by her 13th birthday. First time I drove I was 10 it was in ahuge gravel pit and it was a late sixties Ford F800 dump truck. was driving my mother everywhere by the time I was 14. Dad wouldn't let me till I had my permit though.

Depends on whether you live in the city or in a rural area. If you live in the city, then I really don't see the need for a 14 year old to have a driver's permit. If you live in a rural area where everything is far away and a car is needed to get from place to place, then I think it is ok.

I feel that is way too young, it should be 15 or 16. I think they need a year of experience before getting a regular license and I think they should take a drivers education class if there school offers that as well.

Where I live you can get your drivers license at age 14. It is way to young for a drivers license and more and more parents are allowing their kids to get licensed at an earlier age. The earliest someone should be allowed to get a license is age 16
