And the questions begin. If you or anyone for that matter finds the real definition please let us (everyone searching for the real diagnoses) all know. So many mis-diagnosed every day so doctors can make a buck. it is truly not fair.

Personally- I take Lithobid (or really TOOK because the side effects were too much to handle). Bi-polar disorder describes the manic and depressive states of a person's mind. It is indicated by a variety of factors some peopel experience more depressive states than others and some experience more manic (or erractic/excited) states than others. I myself was more manic than depressive so I would go for weeks at a time as though I were sitting on top of the world and all of a sudden fall into a deep depressive state that would prevent me from maintaining healthy relationships and activities nearly impossible and then all of a sudden that irrational and erratic behavior would return and I'd be on top of the world again. I drank alot as well as a form of self-medication which is apparently a common fact about those suffering from bipolar disorder. Panic Attacks and Anxiety disorders are common- I frequently had hand shakes and sweaty palms and increased heart rate. The disease is quite hard to diagnose because the symptoms vary by individuals and classifying a person as depressive one day may disregard their behavior at other times. There are a variety of medications availbile for treating the disease including Lithobid. I hope this helps- if you are researching or are recently diagnosed or no someone who was. Bipolar sufferers are known to be extremely creative due to the mood swings so that's a major upside (I myself write alot) and the disease is being researched more nowadays so hopefully more treatment options will be availible soon- though I heavy recommend therapist visits as the biggest form of treatment to determine whether or not medication is a viable option. Good luck again!

From what little I know it is a condition formally known as manic depressive. For the most part you need some kind of anti-depressant administered and monitored by a doctor. It is not a condition that you should take lightly. It requires a good doctor & the proper meds. You may want to get a second opioion before you start with any kind of treatment. Good luck & best wishes

Bi-polar disorder/manic depressive is a chemical imbalance in the brain. Someone who suffers from this disorder needs to be medically treated. It's not an overnight fix. It takes time and effort on the physican and the person to get the med's to where the chemical imbalance is righted, even then it's not a garuantee. It's a long and slow process. The person has severe mood swings, happy-go-lucky one moment, the next, just wants crawl under a rock and let the world pass you by.

TO THE VERY MISINFORMED PERSON FURTHER UP THE PAGE>>>>BIPOLAR IS NOT SCHIZOPHRENIA. Schizophrenia can can be similar in SOME cases but can include severe delusional episodes where the individual be paranoid or even reside in an almost totally fictional reality.
Bipolar is a mental condition where the sufferer swings between extremes of mood and behavior, called highs and lows.
Lows can include depression, anger, aggression, suicidal tendencies and being withdrawn.
Highs include feelings of extreme well being, estascy, invincibility and boundless energy. They may behave in ways not normal to their personality, ie over spending, being promiscuous, extremely energetic or doing things that are very dangerous or have serious consequences without stopping to consider the reprocussions.

According to the medical dictionary, Bi-polar means: A type of depressive disease, formerly called manic-depressive illness. Not nearly as prevalent as other forms of depressive disorders, bipolar disorder involves cycles of depression and elation or mania. Sometimes the mood switches are dramatic and rapid, but most often they are gradual. Mania often affects thinking, judgment, and social behaviour in ways that cause serious problems and embarrassment. For example, unwise business or financial decisions may be made when an individual is in a manic phase. Bipolar disorder is often a chronic recurring condition.

bipolar well, it typically is mood swings and used to be treated with lithium. sometimes people don't sleep during bad episodes and they think they can get a lot done and are so creative. My late mother-in-law and best friend's older sister and my friend's daughter are all bipolar and my friend's daughter can't get social security disability income because they keep turning her down. My freind's older sister she has had 2 nervous breakdowns and smokes like a chimney and my friend's daughter was married 2 times well she's still married to one man and engaged to another with 2 kids.

One minute you are happy as heck then next minute you are angry or sad or worried. Your feelings are all over the place and you cannot control the ways you feel. It is a sad problem but there are medications and therapy that will help.

Another name is Schizophrenia, but the political correct name is Bi-polar.
It can't really be cured but can be controlled quite well with medication, unfortunately the people who take the medication feel well enough to think they don't need the medications and stop taking them, and then sprial down hill into addiction to alcohol or street drugs
A lot of the homeless on the streets are Bi-polar
