a foster care home is a great place for this- there are often 'hold over' homes in the area that house several foster children that are in between foster homes or waiting to go back to their parents- these kids often come to these temporary placements with nothing but the clothes on their backs. The state only pays for so much. Having lived in two of these types of places, i can tell you, any clothing, school supplies and diversionary things like games, books, coloring books, etc are always greatly appreciated.

How about the Salvation Army or St Vincent De Paul?
Also Day Cares might want free coloring books and school supplies.
Any nonprofit would be happy to have this donated. Look for nonprofits in your town on the web or in the local newspaper.
They are always in need of supplies and are so grateful when you donate.
Thanx for caring!

You can check www.anysoldier.com This is a website set up for US soldiers serving overseas. They ask for things they need for themselves or for the surrounding community. Many of them ask for children's items to foster good relations with the Locals. These items go to local schools, orphanages, etc. You can send the books or school supplies in a Priority Bulk Rate box which will cost $8.10 no matter what it weighs.

Domestic violence shelters can surely use any donations at anytime of the year. Mother's often have to bring their children with them to shelters and it's nice when there are items such as coloring books and toys available for the children.
Take care.

Maybe a local Children's hospital in your area, an orphange or shelter. Or maybe just your local elementary school. With budget cuts, I'm sure they would be more than happy to get any new school supplies.

You have some good answers already just want to add the suggestions of shelters both domestic violence shelters and homeless families shelters. The kids come with almost no toys usually and they need quiet things to play with.
