Most people who will speak to you will speak with basic language and some slang. If you are upset that your kids are more fluent than you, it is understandable, they just pick up the language faster. If you are frustrated because you dont understand, I recommend, as them what it means, make a list and flash cards, look it up in the dictionary and practice!

I think you must always use the correct language for the situation. You probably would not use the same level of speech at home or with friends as you would in a business or professional setting.

I have always struggled with proper grammar so when I write something down I try to use more proper or professional writing because it is as if it were on permanent record. If something is written down you do not know how long that record will be saved so you do not want it to look bad on you in the future.

It seems like you are working on it and that is what is important because we can never be perfect, we should always try to make ourselves better. Good luck:)

People like to show off, and that's why they use complex words. I wouldn't call it "advanced" English though. I guess using big words gives them the impression that they would look smart!

If they don't understand you, then say it more simply.
But it is good to use advanced English if you can. You can express your meaning better. Also, it sounds better.
