My mom's dog that I inherited when she passed last December doesn't seem to be doing well. She has an odor that is something like a rancid sugary smell. It smells just like it did in the room when my mom passed. Is this a sign she is going to pass soon? What else do I look for?

Yes
Breath may stink, decrease in appetite, dark bloody stools, increase in sleeping.

The sugary smell could be an indication of canine diabetes. Diabetes could be an indication that kidneys are beginning to fail. I would think that it won't be long before you loose her.

You should talk to your vet and see if he thinks your pet is in pain (and that is a possibility). If he thinks that is a possibility then you should perhaps consider putting her down. It's a hard choice - sure - but responsible pet owns always consider a pet's quality of life, too.

Problems breathing, sleeping a lot, not being able to pass urine. She may be having some problems with her bodily functions, that is why she is not smelling right. You might want to take her to the vet and have them check her over to make sure that she is not in any pain. It does sound like she is going downhill and that her time may be near.

Have you considered taking the dog to the vet?
A vet could check your dog, and tell you far more about her condition than anyone on here!

she will go off her food.... refuse to go outside...and look depressed. the smell could be a sign, she had a long life :)
you could vet her to to get another opinion, and help her pass over...(to your mom) ... its a very unselfish thing to do...all dogs go to heaven :)

I think so. My old Peke also had that - have it checked by the vet for possible infections.

Check if it has already made its Last Will...:-P
