When I adopted my female dog as an abandoned stray I paid a 150 dollar deposit at the pound to be returned when I got her spayed. I took her to the vet the day I got her and they told me there was no way to tell if she was spayed already and that I should just go ahead with the surgery and if she was already done I would still have to pay. I refused to do so and decided to wait to see if she went into heat and so tell that way, well the pound would not extend the deposit date to wait for that so I ended up losing my deposit but saved my dog being cut open for no reason, just in case. It turned out she was not spayed and as soon as I knew that I got her done.. But I feel cheated still out of my money, I mean is there really no test at all to tell if a dog is already spayed besides cutting them open??

It's b/s.
I work at a Boarding Kennel, and even if you cant see the actual operation scar on skin, you can feel a ridge on the abdominal muscle where the muscle healed. just run ur hand on her tummy where her belly button would be.
in any case, if you adopted her from a shelter, and they didnt see if she went into season while she was with them, they suck, and obviously dont keep any record of the animals they have there.
bitches go on heat every 4 to 6 months if they arent covered and get pregnant.
they were lying to you and just wanted your money.
at least you know the money went towards a good cause.

Most of the time, the dog has an incision scar, but not always. Some dogs heal up quite nicely!

We've had a few dogs come in to get spayed and OPPS! , someone else got there first. Sometimes, you really can't tell.

Much of the surgery cost revolves around the anesthesia, antibiotic injection, pain injection, time spent (vet's and support staff's) and such, so I can see why the surgery would be almost as much regardless of the dog's status. Actually removing the dog's reproductive organs doesn't take long at all, it's all the befores and afters that take a lot of time.

It is not impossible, but it can be really hard. They can only feel for what may be a spay scar on the abdominal wall. There may be a scar there from another procedure, so the dog may still not be spayed. One of my female dogs has had one litter of puppies (just so everyone knows and won't be nasty about it, she is an AKC conformation champion that has passed all of her health tests with flying colors and the same with the sire) via c-section and it feels like it is a spay scar, but she is still intact.

They also may not feel that there is a scar there, but they have been spayed and the vet just did a really good job of stitching the dog up.

Most of the time a veterinarian can tell if a female dog is spayed by looking/feeling for scars around the "belly" area. Somtimes though, depending on how long ago they were spayed, it is difficult to tell. It is not impossible though, an x-ray of the abdomen will surely prove wether or not the dog is spayed. Though x-rays are not cheap, they are less expensive than surgery.

Yeah there is a way, to do an ultrasound on the dog if u can not see a scar, a bit harder, but u can also see the ovaries on an X-Ray. If your vet doesn't have an ultrasound machine, I would be looking for a different vet, I actually would look for a different vet any way, since it sounds like he prefers to charge a couple hundreds for the operation instead of $50 for an ultrasound, of $20 for an X-Ray.

Unless her ear was tattooed at the time of desexing or it's recorded on the microchip details, there is no way of knowing. It is a good idea to get the tattoo to prevent this occuring and the poor animal having to go through an unnecessary surgery should they end up in a shelter. Good on you for doing the right thing and having her speyed, even if she's already done!

Most dogs that has been spayed will have a little scaring on her belly. Also if they cut her then they would of seen if she was spayed or not.I would try to get the money back since they gave you a BS story.

An ultrasound will show whether she is spayed..The scar is too well healed in some dogs to tell that by looking for the scar..

My vet always leaves a little wire stitch under the skin when he sews them up. That way you can easily feel it and tell if they have been spayed. Gee that was silly, spaying her would have cost a lot less than 150 bucks.

No, it's no impossible!
A doctor should be able to tell, matter of fact, anyone can, if there are inside stitches or not. They stay there forever.
What they cannot tell though is why the stitches are there, because they're used for either the spay and the c-section.
