Eat healthy and try to be as stress free as possible. You don't need to buy anything yet. The only thing you COULD start to buy is diapers to help stock up but I would buy all different sizes if you were to do that. Buy the book "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and "What to Expect in the First Year", they are like the pregnancy and new mom sanity guide. Eventually you will want "What to Expect in the Toddler Years" as well but not for a little while. WIC is a great program to get started with. You will need to call and make an appt. and you will need to fall into the financial category that qualifies but try no matter how much your household makes. Depending on where you live depends on other programs offered but WIC should know of most of them. Congrats!

As another poster said -- "What to Expect When You're Expecting" isn't very good. It's a lot of fact-free "information" that makes a lot of mothers-to-be panicky, and it raises a number of questions you wouldn't otherwise worry about -- and then goes on to not answer them.

Dr Sears' books are pretty good, and "The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth" is a must-read.

Don't drink too much coffee, very little if any alcohol, avoid foods with a high risk of food poisoning; pretty basic "don't do anything stupid." Don't take any medications without finding out if they're "safe" -- ask a doctor, pharmacist, or midwife. You can find a basic pre-natal vitamin supplement, which is all you need, at any pharmacy.

I recommend finding a good licensed midwife, if you have them in your area; much better than doctors, in my (and a lot of other people's) experience.

WIC: http://www.fns.usda.gov/wic/ -- not American, can't tell you much more.

And, what to buy? Not much. Just a few good books, really.

Edited to add: re. the above post and WIC and "and when the baby comes formula" -- say "no, thanks; breast-feeding is healthiest."

Okay I just had my first child on feb 19th. First thing breathe.
I had the book what to expect when ur expecting its a good book. It will answer most questions. It walks u through month by month. Next I wouldnt buy anything just yet. Later on about 3 months u will need maternity clothes. I didnt buy much for the baby because of my baby shower. Diapers are a plus. Dont buy a lot of size newborn. My daughter is 4 weeks old and in size 1. But they do go through a lot of size 1's. Next Im on wic, or on welfare (medical card, foodstamps ect) you need proof of pregnancy. I went to the womens clinic, its a low income clinic. Go in tell them u need a pregnancy test. They will hav eu pee in a cup and drop a stick in it. They will then give u a piece of paper verifying ur pregnant. Take that to wic along with proof of income, Id. They will have u fill out papers and stick ur finger for a iron sample. Then they will give u coupons and a folder. U get milk, eggs, cheese, cereal, juice, peanut butter and when the baby comes formula. Dont worry about protecting urself ur prob pretty young and the baby is safe in there. I fell on a patch of ice this winer and my daughter was fine. Go to the welfare office if u dont have medical insurance and get a medical card. Get in the phone book and find obgyn( these are baby docs) call around untill u find one taking patients. Find one close to home cause u will be going alot. The doc will put u on prenatals. If u cannot keep them down(I couldnt) take flinstone vitamins. I had terriable morning sickness. I had an ultrasound around 12 weeks and found out the sex at 20 weeks. Felt the baby kick around 19 weeks. Its long and at the end yur miserable but honey it is so worth it. If u have anymore questions email me at crystaldawn8563@yahoo.com. I dont know how old u are. Im 21. Get an Epidural. Its great I felt no pain after it except pressure and they cut me..

There's nothing to shop for at this point. Take a prenatal vitamin, the folic acid is essential in virtually eliminating spinal cord malformations (namely spina bifida). My doctor calls "What to Expect..." the worst pregnancy book with the best title. It's fairly alarming to read and tends to deal mostly with all the things that can go wrong, even though those things are fairly rare. A better book is "Your Pregnancy & Birth" published by the American College of Gynecologists and Obstetricians (here's a link: http://product.half.ebay.com/Your-Pregnancy-Birth_W0QQprZ45103908QQtgZinfo ). Just make sure to eat a healthy diet. Pregnancy is not an excuse to eat anything and everything. Any exercises that you were doing before getting pregnant are fine to do at this point, just don't wear yourself out too much. Later in pregnancy you won't be able to do situps anymore but that will come much later.

As far as WIC or Medicaid go I don't have any personal experience with either. You basically will just have to go and apply if you think that you need it. Generally, if you make more than 185% of the poverty level income then you don't qualify for social services. Just do an internet search for "(Your State) WIC"

So, just to sum up. At this point you just need to start on the prenatal vitamins if you haven't already (you don't need a prescription, they sell them over the counter), drink plenty of water, and eat a healthy diet.

First, you need to relax. You have plenty of time to figure things out and even then, you will be winging it for the rest of your life. I am personally not a fan of "what to expect when you are expecting". I hated the entire format of the book and believe that it could really stress a mom-to-be out. The "Girlfriend's Guide To Pregnancy" is a fun book because it's supposed to be written to you by your friend and not a doctor. Stuff you would never ask your doctor is addressed here. The book that I found to be the most helpful (yes, you will laugh at the title!) "Pregnancy For Dummies" . It was a great resource and I've bought several other books "for dummies" because of it. "Babies First Year for Dummies" turned out to be a great resource for all of my questions. Also, babycenter.com is a great website to go to. They will e-mail you every week and tell you how your baby should be forming and even what size of fruit he/she might be. Congratulations! P.S. Get all the sleep you can before the baby is born. You will miss it!

Get the book- "What to expect when you are expecting"!
That is a wonderful easy way to know what's going on!
"The Girlfriends guide to pregnancy" is great too.!

Eat right, Sleep well, Drink lots of water and take that prenatal vitamin at bedtime. Eat only the best things with Folic acid and lots of natural calcuim and love yourself and that baby. Best wishes. I drank protein shakes for months when I was so nausua, nothing would stay down, so it was protein shakes and pills at night.

Do you have insurance? If not you "may" be eligible for WIC.
Talk to your support system (family & Friends) get wise advise from friends and such. TAKE anything they give you for the baby. I must tell you, that stuff is expensive, so get handme downs! Other mothers want to help you. so let them.
Just hug them and say thank you, even if its not 100% of what you want, trust me on this one.

Best wishes new momma. Welcome to a wonderful adventure and you will forever be "in love" now. You will know what I mean the minute you "hold them".

The best thing you can do at the moment is to take care of yourself. If you smoke or drink, stop doing those things. Eat healthy foods, get plenty of rest, and stick with a regular program of exercise. Don't take any kind of medication that you don't absolutely have to - not even over-the-counter things. Make an appointment with a doctor for pre-natal care; if you need help with that, you should be able to talk to a social service agency about finding care. They should also help you to get started with WIC.

Congrats, and good luck!

you need to start taking Prenatal Vitamins. you can go to walmart and get it. look at the labels and see which one has the most folic acid. whichever one has the most folic acid, is the one that is best for you and your baby. you don't need to have prescription prenatal pills. i asked my doctor and she said that any pharmacy is okay. and that you should choose the one that has the most folic acid.

you shouldn't carry or lift anything weighing more than 30lbs.

if you get WIC now, they will just help you out with some food b/c you are pregnant. such as milk, eggs, cereal, beans, and other things like that. when your baby is born, they will help you out with formula.

since you are only one month pregnant you don't really need to buy anything other than prenatal vitamins. you won't really need to buy anything until you are in your second trimester.
