I have '97 chevy cavalier, recently someone left a post it on my door asking to buy it, i talked to my father, and he said he is going to call the guy and see what he will pay. If he will pay more than 2grand (we paid 1600) then my dad says he will sell it if i want him to. What are your opinions, should i sell it or no? And what would a good replacement be? Im expecting the most that i would get for it would be around 4000 so thats the kinda budget im workin with,,,, In case youre wondering the reason i want a new one, is that my interiors are really sucky and old, and the shiny coat over the paint is starting to peel, overall its kinda ghetto looking. If i dont sell it, then i will have to wait for mom to let me getta job in order to fix it up... So yea i guess thats all... Thanks for any help you provide

***** you know what guys, i think i wont sell it. my uncle got it for me as a gift, and he said he didnt mind me selling it, but i feel kinda bad about it and its a good reliable car, and i dont think i wanna deal with the mess of selling and buying, i think i would ratherjust wait paitently and earn the money to fix it up a little.... but if u still wanna be helpful, how much does (a) a paint job, (b) a new stereo with a cd player, and (c) new interiors, usually cost?

If your Cavalier is in good mechanical condition KEEP IT! It is very difficult to get a reliable, good running car in the $2000 range. If you buy something else you're buying an unknown. All kinds of things could easily go wrong with it soon after your purchase. At least with this car you know exactly where you stand. You're always better off buying an ugly car that runs great than a great looking car that runs poor. If you do decide to sell, a more realistic place than Kelley Blue Book to look at is Edmunds. They have what they call TMV (True Market Value) and you can look at the Private Party TMV to see what your car should legitamately sell for.

If the car is as you say... you won't get $4000. The way i look at it though... if you paid 1600 for it, and you got some use out of it, and then sold it for 2000, you're coming out ahead. Not to rain on your parade, but cavaliers suck man. I'm not just saying that because i think chevy's suck, or i think they're ugly or what have you... they are truly a poorly built car. You can buy a lot better car for $2000. A LOT!

Get yourself an early 90's Jetta, or a volvo (might not look awesome, but will run FOREVER.) Even something like an accord, or camry will be a far better quality car. Yes, you will have to buy cars that are older than your current one in order to fall into your budget.... but TRUST me. These cars are far superior in everyway.... comfort, reliability, looks and speed (minus the volvo on the speed maybe, lol)
Goodluck man!

Look in the paper and see what kind of prices the cars sell for. Also make sure that the money you get is CASH and not a "hot" check that he says is good. He is off with your car, legally in a way as you did give him permission to drive it. I know it sucks but thats the law.

Anyway, IF you sell it for 4000, then see what you can buy for 2000. Then you 2000 to fix your your vehicle to a new shape and appearance. Just a thought.

If in the US, here is the Blue book
