It depends on the church he is pastoring. My brother is a pastor at a small baptist church and we cannot pay him enough to be full time so he has another job to pay the bills. Some pastors of the larger churches here are full time and when they aren't preaching they are out ministering in the community or available at the church office. My brother even though he works is very available to the congregation.

Many pastors of small churches do have other jobs. One I know is a carpenter by trade, just like Jesus, and a fishermen of men, just like Jesus, every day of the week, whether he's making home repairs or preaching from the pulpit. Pastors of large churches are afforded a salary which allows them time to study and prepare a message. Many also teach a Sunday school lesson, counsel on weekdays, visit the sick and the elderly, direct food and clothing ministries, and still find time to be husbands, fathers, sons, and friends.

You would not be able to keep up with most pastors. They stay busy. I knew of one that seemed to be in a hurry every time I saw him outside the church.
Some pastors of small churches do work a regular job in addition to being pastor.

The Apostle Paul made tents for a living so he wouldn't be a burden to the people.
So guess what a pastor should be doing. WORKING.

A lot. He spends time working out his sermon, responding to some rude and not-so-rude e-mails, praying with people, spending time with family... That's among the things a pastor does. I can't say for sure since I'm not one...
