A lot of times it's caused by somebody being depressed and unable to deal with their emotions in any other way. Sometimes it's for attention. It just depends on the person.

Feeling the physical pain of cutting overpowers the emotional pain and so avoids pain. That doesn't make sense to us but to the mind of a cutter it does work. The cutter's mind has had a psychosis and a logic patch was made to make right the world. Under extreme sadness of mind she was forced to relearn a sexual belief or expectation. The mind being forced to relearn a belief released some unbalanced chemicals into the spinal fluid that affected the lower or auto brain. The auto brain was then able to reroute the messages of cutting which is damage and shock. The upper brain got the message in the area for a euphoric feeling like an orgasm. This removed the pain chemically from your system and a patch was made and installed so everything looked like good reasoning. Now every time the brain is depressed and pain results your desire to cut grows to feel good again. Until a strong emotion is found in life to undo this logic patch the brain can't think that it is wrong to cut even though the brain can see the blood. So it is in life whenever a pleasure is discovered the brain will chose pleasure and abandon logical reasoning. Fortunately this disorder is usually gone by age twenty. Nonetheless depression will remain a life issue......................................

There are actually many different reasons.

Sometimes it is attention, but people looking for attention will cut so that it is obvious. Private cutting that is hidden is obviously not about attention.

People who are depressed or detached sometimes cut because they want to "feel". The rest of their life is dull and the adrenaline and endorphins caused by the taboo and painful act is like a thrill.

Some people do it because they don't have control over other aspects of themselves, so they have a need to demonstrate to themselves an act of ultimate control.

Some people do it because they have severe mental illness.

Basically the same causes as for alcoholics, drug addicts, and all other self-destructive behaviors. Depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, guilt, having been abused, any number of other disorders or problems.

It is a pity that more people with these problems are afraid to go for professional help--than taking such chances with their very lives. Most cities and states have free and sliding-scale mental health clinics, where people can be treated as out-patients--so having no money or coverage is not an excuse not to get help.

I would check web md & with Hospital websites to see if they have links or helpful info. With my experiences it turned out to be several reasons for several people. One was attention. Another it was a dare between stupid guys. One was suicidal and she kept thinking she should try life 1 more time. She never got the proper help & 12 yrs later when all looked great in her life she killed herself. There are disorders too. Hope all turns out well or this helped you in some way.

Usually due to depression. Cutting releases certain endorphins to combat the pain. Endorphins give a natural feeling of well being. Therefore, some depressed people cut themselves to try to feel better.

The lack of tools to deal with overwhelming emotions. Cutting seems to be a release of a build up of emotions that they cannot deal with in any other way. Physical pain is easier than emotional pain.

hmm, it could be depression, the cuttiee can fell left out, unwanted, and is also a sign of thoughts of suicide. When someone starts cutting, they r trying to call out for help, but not with words. Just like O.D.ing, ur trying to say u need help, but indirectly.

I strongly suspect it's a mental health issue. Counseling is definately the order of the day for anyone who mutilates themselves like that. Seriously.
