The toughest part is making up your mind....and I
mean truly making up your mind. Next, it is the
first three day or so like you say. For me, the
worst is when I have a cup of coffee or when I
get stressed out.

I have never smoked, but there is a Rx drug that is relatively new called Chantix. It is made for smoking cessation. The cost per month is the same as a one pack per day habit. It works by blocking the nicotine receptors in the brain and exciting them at the same time meaning that while taking it, if you smoke, you'll only get a slight buzz and smoking will become less attractive to you. I am not really sure how long you have to take it for the best results, but we have several patients on it right now and claim it's a miracle drug. I hope this info is helpful even though not really the answer to the questions you were asking. Ask your doctor for a free sample. Chantix might seem expensive when you buy it a month a time, but in the long run, cheaper than lung cancer.

Pyre, I can't help much with the comparison as i went Cold Turkey. I smoked for almost 25 years and quit almost l7years ago. The first three weeks were horrible. My daughter had nagged for years to get me to quit and I was soooo grumpy that she was begging me to start smoking again!!! It was hard, I can't believe howhard it was toquit but I am so glad I did. After those first three weeks, the nicotine was completely out of my system and I started to feel better physically. I also have kept track ofthe cost of cigarettes and that alone was a good reason for me to quit. It isnt easy but it is doable. and I think you can doit. Good Luck -k-

right now i'm finishing day 3 with the patch, and so far so good!!!!!! i smoked for 35 years and have tried stopping cold turkey before, didn't work for me, so this time i decided to try the patch, since my body is still getting the nicotine i'm not craving a cigarette, so i'm working on changing my habits, you know the things i am generally doing while i'm smoking, i am very determined to quit and i think thats 90% of the battle, deciding that its really what you want to do. good luck with it, and wish me luck too

if you set yourself a date in say 2 weeks where you'll stop smoking and really mean it, think about stopping and commit yourself to it, don't just wake up one morning and decide that you're quitting - it'll be much harder that way. the first 3 - 5 days are quite hard you find yourself quite agitated and the cravings can be bad but they only last for a couple of minutes at a time and if you can get past them. It will get easier. If you're in the UK speak to your GP they can offer a lot of help and advice. Good luck.

Three days are the worst, if your not prepared to quit. Before you make a major choice like that, I advise you to look for resources that can aid you in your proccess. They do have smokers support groups check your local hospital to see if any are in your area.

The patch does increase the success rate as do all NRT. But to be frank the increase is only modest.
