We're both 18, almost 19. He's in the army. We've been dating for 1 year. They never let him out of the house during the week, even though we leave school at noon. All he does is sit at home. Is it normal to control your kids that much, or am I over reacting? It seems to me that since he is an adult and enlisted in the Army that he should be able to make his own decisions. What should I do? It bothers me that our time is so limited.

Sounds like he NEEDS to be in the army where someone will teach him how to act like a grownup. When he gets some time in the service he should learn how to be more mature. If he still lets his parents dominate him when he comes home on leave....dump him. You don't want to spend your life with a guy who allows his parents to dictate your lives.

if he is living under their roof, then what they say goes. if you were paying all the bills and you had a roommate who did something you didn't want (say, leave dirty clothes in the living room) would you not tell them to stop? i know it's cliche to say 'my house, my rules', but that's the way it is. if he payed rent, that's a different situation...he IS an adult and if there is payment involved, then he does have some say. if he's sick of being controlled, he needs to get out.

Yes his parent are obviously control freaks, get him out of there. But what does he say about the situation, does he mind?
