I actually know how you feel. I'm a sprinter and I've been thrown into running the 800 and mile before.

Just imagine running a 400 but doing it slightly differently. Assuming you split the 400 into four parts, the start, front stretch, turn, and the finish. Start like you would and hold it for about the first 150m. Go at your front stretch pace for about 300m. Push it the next 250m. Then finish the last 100 as you normally would with pure adrenalin. I run a 52s 400 and this method lets me run a sub 2 minute 800.

As for the spikes, if your comfortable in them, it doesn't matter. The race will be over before you notice anything. Now, you will have issues if you have to run a mile in them, but the 800 is technically still a sprint so your good to go.

Good Luck!

What do you mean you don't have a heel? Any spike has a heel so that's pretty weird. Anyway, since you are a sprinter, running the 800m will produce different strategies.
Since you haven't even run this event yet, you want to find the best pace possible that you can keep up with early in the match. You don't want to go too slow or too fast, but if you can keep up with the leader then that's fine. If you can't, you want to follow him as best as you can and give him a little space, but don't give up too much ground to him. This "follow-the-leader" or "pace with another runner" should be kept up until 500m into the race. When there's 300m left to go, you want to start to kick things up a notch by little. When you get to the 200m mark left, kick things up more, and by the 100m you should be full-out sprinting. Also, you want to give everything you got in the race, because you should be dead tired at the end of the race. Don't save up energy for the last kick, because that kind of thinking will have you running slow and saving up everything for only the last portion of the race. This will also have you falling behind a major portion of the race. Anyway, your kick should be awesome nonetheless because you are a sprinter. You should be smoking up the last 100m of the race with your sprinting advantage.
Well good luck!

i dont think the heel will make a difference unless you are just looking for an excuse. i best advice is if you are going for the win, stay with the leader the first 300 meters and then the last 500 meters you just leave the leader and give it all you got.

if your running for time, i suggest that you run the first 400 at 90% and then the last 400 you go all out and try to beat the first 400.

since you are a sprinter you might not be in good shape to run a good 800 beacuse the 800 is one of the hardest events and you need to have endurance for it.

good luck. and i hope this helps.

The same spikes you use for the 400M will be fine for the 800M.

Go out at about 95% of what the effort that you would normally go out for a 400M. You DON'T want to be leading for the first lap coming up from the quarter. Depending on what you normal quarter time is you should probably be coming through the split a good 5-8 seconds slower than you normal time. Then you want to really concentrate on keeping you stride the same normal length for the 3rd 200M, coming out of the final turn let it all loose. Hopefully you will run about 2-5 seconds faster for your second 400 as you did on your first.
