I noticed that a food item I recently bought has to K on it, but under the K it says "DE".

What does that mean?

The K looked like the one on the bottom right hand corner of the above link.

The origin of the symbol on the bottom right is:
Kof-K Kosher Supervision
201 The Plaza, Teaneck, NJ 07666
Phone: (201) 837-0500; Fax: (201) 837-0126
Rabbinic Administrator: Rabbi Aharon Felder

The DE stands for:
DE — Dairy Equipment (no actual dairy in ingredients, hence it can be eaten after a meat meal, but not together with meat)

The symbol lets you know the source of certification. The symbol in the starbulletin:

Kof-K Kosher Supervision
201 The Plaza, Teaneck, NJ 07666
Phone: (201) 837-0500; Fax: (201) 837-0126
Rabbinic Administrator: Rabbi Aharon Felder

Some agencies try to inform the consumer regarding the full status of the products under their supervision. The following are some of their designations with their meanings:
D — Dairy
DE — Dairy Equipment (no actual dairy in ingredients, hence it can be eaten after a meat meal, but not together with meat)
P — Passover; Kosher for all year including Passover (Note: “P” NEVER designates pareve)
Pareve — Non-dairy and non-meat
Chalav Yisrael — Kosher supervised milk used in ingredients
Pas Yisrael — Jewish baked goods
Yashan — Not from current grain crop

DE stands for Dairy Equipment, just to let you know that if the food is parve (not meat, nor dairy)...that you shouldn't eat this product with meat since it was made with dairy equipments.

If it has a D, then it is purely dairy.
