My family just got a Quaker parrot a week ago and we've had a daschund for almost 2 years.

The dog will not leave the bird alone. She is always watching the bird.

How do I get her (in a non-violent manner) to leave the bird alone?

Oh, Honey, PLEASE do not take any chances with your Quaker and your Dachshund. I own a Quaker- unfortunately my second. My first Quaker was killed by my most aggressive hunting Dachshund. My grandson (2 yrs. old) accidentally left my Quaker's cage door open. As soon as the little thing flew to the floor, it was killed instantly. Please remember that the Dachshund breed was originated to hunt badgers, foxes and rabbits. They are extraordinarily vicious little hunters. I currently own 6 Dachshunds (I am a breeder) and I frequently find squirrells, baby kittens, lizzards, frogs, turtles, opposoms, and a variety of birds, dead in my yard. I have but one Dachshund that seems to have no interest in killing. She was a puppy I bought to take to my mom 9 years ago. I brought Cassie (mom's dog) home 3 years ago after mom died. Cassie is a pouter. She just gives a curious sniff, puffs up like a toad, and stomps off in disgust at the sight/sniff of a new critter. Still- although she does not exhibit the usual characteristics of most Daschunds, I would not take any chances. I have one older female that will even kill another females puppies if she gets a chance. I crate my dogs when I have my Quaker out of its cage. Love your Quaker and love your Dachshund.........separately. My best to you and your critters.

The people that owned our Blue Fronted Amazon before us had about half a dozen Dachshunds. The lived together for, at least, 5 years. The alpha-male never stopped harassing the bird. There was always supervision, so the bird was never hurt. But, he always was looking at the bird and trying to jump up to her cage to bark at her. Like the first answerer said, Dachshunds are bred to hunt. They aren't going to stop.

Doxies are hunting dogs. She's NOT going to leave the bird alone, not totally. Just make sure she can't get to the bird cage!
