why are blue-footed boobies' feet blue?

I was watching the new Galapagos series on National Geographic channel and they were saying that it isn't known why the feet are blue. But, I think it may be due to simple sexual selection because in the mating ritual the male takes large steps as to show off his blue feet.

Why do some people have blond hair? It is just genetics, but I do think that it would help keep them from sunburning.
