I have had a cough for about a week now. I cough a lot throughout the day and feel a lot of mucus down in my throat and lungs. I had a coughing fit a few moments ago and I thought I was going to vomit, it was very intense. All of a sudden, I threw up a thick wad of bright yellow-orangish stuff. Should I be worried?

Yes, you should see a doctor as Pneumonia is going around. I also have people I work with that have bronchitis. Nothing to mess with. You should be on something to thin the mucus like mucinex. The doctor will prescribe what he/she thinks is best for you. If you have had it a week, it is time you went to see your doctor.

Yellow mucus is a sign of infection.

Coughs
Coughing is the body's way of removing foreign material or mucus from the lungs. Coughs have distinctive traits you can learn to recognize.

Productive coughs produce phlegm (sputum). This can be mucus that has drained down the back of the throat from the nose or sinuses (post-nasal drainage) or that has come up from the lungs. A cough that is producing sputum from the lungs generally should not be suppressed so much that it is no longer bringing up mucus; the cough is needed to clear mucus from the lungs.

Non-productive coughs are dry coughs that do not produce sputum. A dry, hacking cough may develop toward the end of a cold or after exposure to an irritant, such as dust or smoke. Dry coughs that follow viral illnesses may last up to several weeks and often get worse at night.

What you can do for your cough:
Drink more fluids (8-12 extra cups per day). Water helps loosen phlegm and soothe an irritated throat.
Cough drops can soothe irritated throats, but most have no effect on the cough-producing mechanism. Expensive medicine-flavored cough drops are not any better than inexpensive candy-flavored ones or hard candy.
Elevate your head with extra pillows at night to ease a dry cough.
Use an over-the-counter cough suppressant containing dextromethorphan to help quiet a dry, hacking cough so you can sleep. If you have a productive cough, don't suppress it so much that you are no longer bringing up mucus.
Stop smoking and avoid others smoke.
See a health professional if you:
have a cough with difficulty breathing or wheezing, or a history of asthma;
have significant chest wall pain (pain in the muscles or ribs of the chest) related to coughing or breathing;
are coughing up yellow, green, or bloody mucus;
have a fever over 100° with a productive cough;
have a cough that lasts longer than one week.

I hope you feel better soon.

I've had that problem 12 years ago. When I went to see the doctor and had me X-rayed, we discovered there was a questionable tiny spot in my upper left lung. He immediately ordered a six months regiment of medications and after that. . .BOOM! Totally gone! I was told coughing with mucus is much better than coughing without mucus. So my advice is to go and see a doctor right away.

Might be a case of Influenza (the Flu). Contrary to popular belief, Influenza is actually a respiratory infection. Normally lasts about five days. Your's is on a week stretch, so I'd recommend going to the doctor. Some good antibiotics should clean ya up in a few days.

I would be. Sounds like bronchitis. That can turn into bronchial pneumonia. A week is to long for you to have a cough as severe as you have suggested. Colored mucous suggest infection and need antibiotics to treat it.
