A recent article in Time Magazine compared & contrasted Sunnies with Shiites, & among other things, said that while Sunnies invoke only Muhammed, with God, Shiites invoke both Muhammed & Ali, his son-in-law.

While it is common knowledge that Muslims pray "There is no god, but, Allah, & Muhammed is His Prophet," how would a Shiite say this then: that Muhammed & Ali are His prophets?

I am a shiaa and no, we do not worship Ali, however, we do believe he was the rightful successor of Prophet Mohamed as Caliph. When Prophet Mohamed passed away (peace be upon him) we believe that Ali should have taken over as Caliph, but it was given to Abu Bakr instead. This is where Islam was split into shiaa and sunni. We all believe the same fundamentals, however the sunnis believe that Abu Bakr was the rightful successor, while shiaas believe it should have been Ali.

Ali is not a prophet. Muhammad(PBUH*) is the last prophet of ALLAH. Shia believe that Ali should have ruled Arabia after the death of the prophet(PBUH*) because Ali is the prophet's cousin. The Prophet specifically chose Abu Bakr who was his father in law(father of Aisha) and close companion as his successor. By the way I'm not a Shiite or Sunni. Just a Muslim.

My family is Muslim, and I was often confused by the difference as well.

It is not a question of who is God, and who is the prophet. All muslims believe in allah and Mohammed. The seperation happened after Mohammed had died. The Shiites believed that Ali (Mohammed's Brother) should take over and lead the religion. Mohammed however had requested his first in command take over. This is who the Sunnies follow. -I wish I could remember the name-

So the base of the religion is the same, it was just a matter of who lead after The Prophets death.

So to get back to your question ... No, they all say that god is one and there is no god But allah and Mohammed is his prophet.

Muhammad is still the prohpet. However, they acknowledge Ali has his strongest follower with 2nd most powerful influence in the spread of islam. Ali was a great warrior par none and the shiite feels it is necessarey that he is invoked too.
