I am a hand gunner when it comes to inside the house and have a S & W686 .357 mag with a 4''. that takes the guess work out of it. I also keep a Remmington 870 wingmaster with an 8 shot tube and a 20'' barrel don't have to leave one chambered just the sound of me racking it should do the trick everybody knows that sound and it's loaded with 00 buck for those close encounters of the intruder kind. Just keep the barrel pointed in a safe direction when chambering

I actually have a story about this. About a year ago (I was 16) and my parents were going to Vegas for their anniversary, we live in WA state. They decided that I was old enough to stay home alone, being that I had at the time 6 rifles (a few more now) in a safe in my room and knew how to use them. After they left I put ten rounds in AR-15 mag and put it in the rifle but I didn't chamber a round and I left the bolt uncocked, so that if I did need to use it I would have to pull back the charging handle first. I am glad I did this because two days later some guy smashed the glass door upstairs, not knowing someone was home. When I heard this I grabbed my AR and loaded a round and aimed at my door and stayed quiet. Sure enough the guy walked in my room and nearly **** his pants when he saw my assault rifle aimed at him. He dropped his pistol and got on the ground, and I then called the police and had the guy arrested. In the time it would have taken me to unlock my safe, get my AR, find a mag, find a box of ammo, load the mag under duress, and chamber a round the guy would have easily already found and likely shot me. Now I always keep my AR loaded but not chambered in my safe, and my PPK loaded but still not chambered around my bedpost at night, during the day it is in my safe with my other guns. As long as it is not chambered you have nothing to worry about. I only chamber a weapon when I will use it in the very near future. With the exception of hunting, in which I chamber a round and flip the safety on when I get into an area where I'll likey find a deer. I don't want my 8-point buck to hear my bolt loading a round and taking off.

I keep a loaded Kimber 1911 in the house, when I leave it goes in the safe, when I come home it comes out. I keep the hammer down, I wouldn't like to accidentally shoot myself and I hope I'll remember to c ock it if I ever need it.
I've never seen an AR slamfire and I have four.

OK about slam fire on a AR 15 well i can tell you this i have been in the military for about 13 years and i haven't even heard of it happing its true if you slam the bolt and chamber a round it will leave a small dent in the primmer of the round but its not enough to fire it as in keeping a loaded firearm in your house that's up to you i personally keep mine loaded.something to keep in mind in stressful situations and adrillen is pumping your hands is going to be numb and have tunnel vision that's why its crucial to practice shooting not just at paper with your buddies for fun but tactual shooting and reloading so loading your weapon is mussel memory

As Jolly said, I don't chamber a round until I'm actually ready to fire, meaning at the gun range or in an open field where it's safe.

If you have children at home, I don't recommend you having loaded guns at all. My kids are 7 and 4 and I only keep a loaded gun if I have it holstered on me. which is almost all the time but if I put it away I always leave semi-autos unchambered with a loaded mag. and revolvers always with the cylinder unloaded.

The "house gun" is the only loaded or chambered gun in the home. Others don't get charged until I reach the range.
