The Bible is a composition of a lot of different texts. In fact, the (single) book of Psalms alone is composed of a lot of different texts. The Vatican (Pope) has some of these texts, and some are owned by various scientists and museums.

There is no way of knowing which ones are actually originals. A lot of the really old stuff would have been reproduced so much already that originals may not even exist.

By the way, it was a king called Constantine that decided which texts would be included in the Bible anyway, so there is no single, all-inclusive "Bible." Perhaps Constantine was divinely inspired about what to include in what we know as the Bible, perhaps not.

The oldest fragments of scripture from the New Testament date into the 100's.These are just bits of papyrus or in some a few pages and are incredibly fragile. There are a few relatively "complete Bibles" which date from the 4th century and one of those is owned by the Vatican, though it seems to be of slightly inferior quality to 2 others from the same time frame. These manuscripts are called Vaticanus (the one at the Vatican), Alexandrinus and Sinaiticus. If I remember right, the other 2 are at the British Museum. The content of these varies and since each was hand written, there are several points where they have minor differences.

NO ONE handles these books, they are just too delicate. They HAVE BEEN PHOTOGRAPHED PAGE BY PAGE, with some photos are visible light and some with UV, or some other light which allows you to see underneath "corrections" to tell what was originally written on the page. The books are stored in temperature and humidity regulated rooms under "clean room" standards... Imagine dressing like a surgeon and using special tools to avoid touching or damaging the pages in order to see them.

... So, the answer is that they ARE READ, but they are read by photographs to protect the original documents.

No, it's not true. It's kinda funny though. There is no "original Bible". The bible has been translated over and over. There is the copy of the Gutenburg Bible, but that isn't "original".

actually the original one has been censored so many times it ain't funny. Why do you think they keep finding things like the gospel according to Judas, and Mary, or even for that matter the collection called the Nostics and dead sea scrolls. it was the fact that religious leaders of the time saw thous books as a threat and they omitted them, hopefully for all times, but nothing stays lost forever, and sooner or latter it will all come full circle and bite someone really hard in the end.

No, they don't have the original, and all of you bright people who say there was no "original" how do you think we got copies? What did they copy if there was no original?
Actually a small fragment of the original book of John has been found.

They wish!!!

If you knew the history of the Bible, it would be self-evident to you that "original Bible" is an incoherent concept, like "almost pregnant" or "airline food" or "perfectly normal."

Now, that's not exactly what I heard, but I did hear something similar. I heard that the former Pope cried because he was unable to tell us the truth about something he knew...that leaves me with a whole lot of questions...

Yep. It is right next to the UFO that the Pope takes to Mars to talk to Jesus.

I do not know. But there are so many copies from the original Bible that we can be sure that the Bible in your hand is God talking to you. :)
