A green card is only given after a person has lived in the US legally for a certain period of time, and applied for permanent residency. If you're a Canadian and want to come live and work in the US, you need to find an employer who will sponsor you for a visa-in addition to the usual visa types, like B visas, or H1B visas, Canadians and Mexicans in certain professions are eligible for TN visas. After spending a few years living legally in the US, then you're allowed to apply for a green card, which grants you permanent residency in the US, assuming you comply with all the conditions. USCIS.gov will tell you more about visa types that may be available to you.

You have to be "petitioned" by a blood relative that is already a U.S. Citizen (mother, father, sister, brother, spouse, child over the age of 21). A permanent resident may also petition for a blood relative although the wait is longer.
The other option is if you get a work visa and your employer decided to petition for you to obtain permanent residency.
