How can some of you answerers possibly say this breed is dumb?

Wonderful !!!!!

What makes them the most happy is when they are pleasing their owners. Maybe they just want a little direction?

They make an excellent pet for children, therapy dogs, seeing eye dogs, etc.
I have my males neutered and always have been able to train them not to jump up on me and other people.

A great site (Carolyn Scott & Rookie)

This is a very vague question. Golden retrievers are wonderful dogs. They grow very fast and if they are not trained as a puppy, you will have a problem on your hands.
Because of their size, they need to learn Not to pull on a leash, Not to jump up on people, To ignore things on tables close to their nose. On the up size, they learn pretty fast and they LOVE their families!! They also love most people. Unfortunately they shed a lot and have a lot of hair. For some crazy reason, Golden Retrievers, In the vet world, have been called tumor dogs because they are so prone to having tumors. Some are fatty tissue, some are cancer. That is a large concern about Golden's. the other thing about Golden's are their life span. The larger the dog, the shorter the life span. I would say average life span is 12 to 14 years. I love Golden Retrievers. You might go to the library and check the book that all library gets about the pros's and con's about different breeds. It is great that you are looking and researching the breed. That is defiantly what you need to do. Good luck with your dog!

There are 2 distinct types, but backyard breeders often mix them. One is the show/conformation type, they are more laid back, the lighter golden color. They are also infinitely trainable and wonderful working dogs, great for Obedience and Rally and Therapy Dogs. Not as good for the speed sports, like Agility.

the red ones are usually more of the field type. You'll find these are the so-called "hyper" Goldens people refer to. They are much more athletic. These usually have even more of the retriever instinct, so don't be surprised if they put everything into their mouths and carry them around. My field type Golden boy is a voracious thief and will steal anything that isn't nailed down. He won't hurt it, he just carries it around.

We are seeing more and more bad temperaments in Goldens, as all breeds. This is mostly due to backyard breeders and Puppy mills breeding anything they think they can make money from, and not eliminating dogs with bad temperaments from their breeding pools. You see this more in the field dogs, but I just rehabilitated an aggressive Conformation type Golden.

wonderful dogs, intelligent and eager to please.

drezdogge is wrong! Goldens may not be as superb as Labs in field work, but they certainly have the skill and endurance to perform.

Goldens are NOT the ideal family dog. This is a stupid phrase that backyard breeders and puppy mills make up to sell their Golden puppies. Goldens need plenty of mental and physical stimulation EVERY DAY, not just one walk and they are fine.
So many families believe the Golden is perfect for them, with their semi-active lives, when really, the Golden ends up overweight, lethargic, and unhappy.
Goldens are working dogs that thrive on plenty of playtime, exercise, and a job to do.

Goldens are terribly over-bred, because so many people that have one believe theirs is the best, and therefore should be bred. The AKC statistic shows that the Golden Retriever is the number three dog in the nation, but that only refers to how many are registered, not just the popular opinion of the nation's people. This goes to show that there are too many being bred, and many of those will end up in rescues and shelters once families realize they cannot handle the high-energy demands of the dogs as adults.

The Golden Retriever's coat ranges from a light gold, but NOT white or cream, to a deep gold, but NOT red!!
Red Goldens and White Goldens are considered FAULTS and are not acceptable by both the AKC and the GRCA.
The new "popular" color of English Cream/White is not favorable and most Golden fanciers/conformation handlers object to the breeding of this pale Golden coat.

As far as sizes go, my female is 57 pounds, and most people think she is "so small" when really, she is the ideal size for a Golden. Goldens 80-100 pounds, unless they happen to be large-boned/high-muscled, are considered heavy and unhealthy.
Also, Goldens less than 50 pounds, which do not appear skinny, are not considered breed-standard either.

Gosh, I could go on and on about my favorite breed ever!!

They were originally bred to be the ideal retrieving/hunting dog and family dog all in one package.

They are usually great family dogs, but do require early training and socialization. The field type are more energetic and usually redder, but both are excellent dogs for competition, Agility, Obedience, Dock Dogs, Rally, Hunt Tests, etc.

They are great temperment wise, never met a mean Golden Retriever in my life. Most are a little on the dumb side. They do shed A LOT, but we take our to get shaved in the shedding months and he is adorable with no hair. Everyone seems to like him better that way.
If you are looking for a good old house dog, they are great, especially with children. Looking for them to do something special like a hunting dog, go with a lab, they are just a tad too dumb for that.
