I've had it my whole life (I'm a teenager). I know it's low blood sugar and I know what to eat when it gets low, etc. I just want to know if I'm more prone to get diabetes? If so, what can I do to prevent the risk of it. There is a slight family history, but no intermediate family.

You may be more prone to getting diabetes, because for some reason you insulin production in your body is out of whack. Right now you are producing too much insulin and it is taking away all the sugar in your blood. Diabetes is the exact opposite, you body does not produce enough insulin. Just eat healthy, five small meals a day would work for you, and occasionally get you blood sugar tested by a Doctor. Good Luck!

An apple a day... Apples have been shown to raise low blood sugar, and lower high, so it's very useful if you like them. Cinnamon also is know to help reduce rates of diabetes, it balances insulin levels. Meat is a know common factor in hypoglycemic induced diabetes -mostly it because too little nutrient rich grains are eaten because the meat makes people full, and slows, and complicates digestion. Try replacing meat with whole grains, beans or whatever tastes good which has better carbohydrate/protein ratio.

Keep meals simple, eat food require different digestive compounds, but chew thoroughly, 20-100 times a bite generally. Digestion starts in the mouth (actually it starts with the mind set when thinking about food...), and sugars are digested properly only with proper chewing.

Never eat anything that doesn't taste good, but also don't eat what's been modified to act as an addictive drug. There's a whole industry of science geared towards figuring out what makes people eat more so they'll buy more food, and overweight people eat more...

Eat only enough, be happy, don't use modified food which are incomplete, or improper complexes of nutrients.

"`Abdu'l-Bahá does often state that the medical science will much improve. With the appearance of every Revelation a new insight is created in man and this in turn expresses itself in the growth of science. This has happened in past dispensations and we find its earliest fruits in our present day. What we see however is only the beginning. With the spiritual awakening of man this force will develop and marvelous results will become manifest. Among other phases of human learning the medical science will have a place. There is a Tablet of Medicine that Bahá'u'lláh has revealed and which is translated into English. That does not contain much of scientific informations but has some interesting advices for keeping healthy."

I had a father that was a diabetic--no insulin--I am the low blood sugar opposite of him--too much insulin--the thing to do is prevent the episodes of low blood sugar---proper diet and little healthy snacks all day long--no white flour, no artificial sweetners ( chemical poison) --lots of protein--like snack bars or protein drinks--yes they may have sugar but not that bad---high protein, low carbs--NO pasta, bread,or sub rolls ---eat a bagel--the starch is boiled out of true bagels. Eat fruit but not grapes or raisins---too much fructose and you can get a headache. NO MSG OR CHINESE FOOD__RICE IS BAD TOO. Drink bottled water--NO SODA. No bacon or ham--they are cured in sugar---but you can have a small BAKED potato---french fries or cold stored potatoes have sugar due to the cold that turns the starch to sugar even before you prepare the potato. No breaded fish or meats--have a steak, have fish, have chicken-----have a big bowl of salad--nothing creamy--oil and vinegar dressing. Do you notice days full of tension and feeling like a person all wound up??? Then you did eat something bad--if you are happy and full of energy--you are doing OK...headache? Can't sleep. sex organ doesn't work?? You are eating bad--NO ALCOHOL or BEER--NEVER--deadly poison to the hypoglycemic. Just do the right stuff--everyday--and don't worry about the why's and whatever--just do the diet and check with a doctor every once in a while. Good luck with it all

I have hypoglycemia also and there is a long history of diabetes in my family. In ways hypoglycemia is just as dangerous as diabetes. Yes, hypoglycemia can turn into diabetes and many doctors suggest it is the forerunner for developing diabetes. Diet is your main prevention but I am not saying diabetes will still not develop. I would contact my doctor for advice and guidance. They are better equipped at helping you make the right decisions and choices than I could.

I have had this all my life, and I do not have diabetes nor will I probably get it as I try to watch my diet. Just make sure you eat 5 small healthy meals or 3 healthy meals and 2 healthy snacks to prevent the dips in the glycemic index. Do not over do the sugar or carbohydrates and eat whole grain breads and cereals and watch eating pastas. Your diet should be very similar to a diabetics.

Hypoglycemia is a condition characterized by an abnormally low level of blood sugar (glucose), your body's main energy source.

Hypoglycemia is commonly associated with diabetes. However, a wide variety of conditions, many of them rare, can cause low blood sugar in people without diabetes. Like fever, hypoglycemia isn't a disease itself, it's an indicator of a health problem.

In people who don't have diabetes, some underlying causes of hypoglycemia include: certain medications; alcohol; certain cancers; critical illnesses such as kidney, liver or heart failure; hormonal deficiencies; and disorders that result in your body producing too much insulin. Insulin is the hormone secreted by your pancreas that regulates your level of blood sugar.

Treatment of hypoglycemia involves short-term steps to get your blood sugar level back into a normal range and long-term steps by your doctor to identify and treat the underlying cause of hypoglycemia.

I would say you aren't prone to diabetes, as what you have is the opposite of it. At your age, most diabetes is not preventable. It's the adult onset kind that can be - it's caused by bad diet choices and weight.
