It all depends on what you want from a dog. Do you want high energy like a Border Collie or a dog more laid back, like an English Bulldog? Your best option would be to go to
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/search.htm
and take this quiz. It helps you determine which breed is right for you and your family based on your lifestyle and time you're willing to put into taking care of a dog. If you have an apartment, a toy breed would be best. If you don't want to have to groom a lot, don't get a sheepdog or collie.
This website also allows you to look up each breed to get a profile and pictures if you're thinking of a specific kind of dog. This way, you can look and see if the one you want will fit in well with your family. I personally love Border Collie's...they're extremely smart and very wily. They can work out problems and outsmart you a lot of times. Mine figured out how the ice maker on the fridge works and I come home to wet spots or leftover ice cubes in the floor.
Good luck finding the dog for you!!

It definitely does matter what type of lifestyle you lead. For our family, where both adults work and are gone about 6 hours/day, we have a child, and we have children and new people running in and out of the home, we needed a dog who would be obedient, patient, friendly, easily trainable, and not mind being in our home most of the day. We also wanted one who would alert us to people coming to the door, but one who was laid back enough not to bark at everyone who walked by on the sidewalk. We opted for a schnoodle, a schnauzer and poodle mixed. She is absolutely the most perfect pet for our family. She is everything I mentioned and then some. On top of that, she is considered a low allergen dog because she doesn't shed. If you like small dogs, I'd definitely recommend looking into a schnoodle. They love being outdoors, but are just as happy indoors: as long as they feel like they're completely part of the family. (Sometimes our Chloe forgets she's a dog.)

i agree with several of the other people that have answered this question. It depends on your lifestyle what room you have outside, what you would consider for a inside dog. Me personally i have a rottweiler and he is a inside dog, but he is perfect for our situation. I feel very comfortable leaving my wife and child at home with him when i got to work at night, but if your into the big breeds do some research on what you think you would like. Rotties, and other big breeds need lots of affection, they need to know that they are wanted, and not just there to be kicked around. That is how i think that you would pick a breed based on your environment that the dog would grow up in.

If your petite small animal-do you want long hair, short hair
carry-think of your weight. Scottish Terrier, Beagle
If you like the outdoors and sports, than the athelete type, agility-collie, labs are great-keep in mind larger animals need lots more room than apt allows.
If you have strengh and you want power-rotties, pits, these animals are great animals and good family dogs up bringing is very important-NO Abuse calm, loving homes only.

I have had the best luck with dogs I get from the pound. They are so happy to get out of there that they make for the nicest most loyal of dogs.
I most recently got a pure bred Siberian Husky. The owner didn't like him because he was small for the breed and some what of an escape artist. But you have to puppy proof your house just like you would baby proof it. :)

A golden retriever would be the best dog, because they get along with kids and other animals. I like them. But they are the best becasue you can hunt with them, use them to find animals, things, people, andyou can use them as seeing eye dogs. Thats why they are the best type of dog!
To me any way?!?

Personally I ADORE Beagles! They are the cutest, have short hair, gently personalities, easy to train and they are the perfect size. Too big to get stepped on like the tiny breeds, but small enough that she can be in the house without needing a whole couch to herself!

Stick with DRY dog food right now, since there has been
animals getting sick from other pet foods. Science Diet is
good and has a great reputation.
