I don't know. If I was living in another country, I would expect to speak their language, not make them learn mine.

You must be living in a city with a high content of non-natives! I myself have heard 2 people with English as a second language yell at each other "you stupid this is America why you no speak English" and the other answers, "you stupid my English is more good than you"!
It made me laugh so hard. So I think non-natives try in their best way....
It's not discriminatory if you ask nicely, Its discriminatory if you are mean about it.

There are several reasons. First of all, in the US there are a lot of foreigners who have just moved and are in the midst perhaps of learning the language. And as the US is a country formed by immigrants it should be considered a discrimination. I believe it depends on where you are asked. When shopping: no need to speak English. When looking for a job: I think it is needed but then the Gov't should aid the legal immigrants in taking language courses. In Switzerland for example if an a legal immigrant can not find work due to lack of language then he/she is put on workers comp then sent to a high rated language course (the good ones that teach you basics in 3 months) for free.

It shouldn't be. If I went anywhere else in the world...I would learn the language is that is where I would be moving too.
If someone wants to live here, then they should learn the Languageof this country...Not what it "SHOULD BE" they need to Learn what "IT IS" and IT IS ENGLISH.
A lot of ignorant *** answer say America is MUlti culture therefore "SHOULD BE" great..SHOULD but ISN'T ok......
We speak English.......English has been Deemed the INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE- We are an INTERNATIONAL COUNTRY therefore we Speak ENGLISH.
There shouldn't be any Argument ...........NONE.....

The way I see it if you want to live in our beautiful country be it USA or Canada you should have to speak English!I see people in the driving school with a translater taking there driving course!How scary is that?I am all for multiculturalism,do not get me wrong.
