I do not think that windows will let you go back in the sequence of windows once the more advanced one is there on your computer.

This can be verified if the error message you get is that " you have a more advanced ...." or something like that.

The only way that i know of is that you will have to format your computer and install Windows XP.... this will make you loose all data. So better back up everything that is important.
Then once that installation is complete run the installation of Windows Vista. And when it asks if you want to make a upgrade or a new installation... you select new installation. This will install Vista keeping the copy of XP.

I've never done it with Vista, but I'm sure there is a way to make it work. Maybe this might help:

What you are going to have to do is delete the partition that Vista is on *WARNING* this will delete everything on the hard drive, so make sure you have all the data files you want to keep backed-up somewhere else. Then you would have to create 2 primary partitions on the hard drive, one for Vista, the other for XP. Then you would have to install a boot manager to be able to switch between them.

You would have to have another partition on your hard drive. So that way you can boot from either XP or VISTA once you have installed XP on the second partition.

confident you are able to set up xp on a vista laptop as long as you will locate all the xp version drivers on your mom board and units. frequently the computing device producer's internet site is a competent place to start finding for the drivers on your computing device which will paintings with xp.

Windows recommends that you partition the hard drive, or use another hard drive for XP.

When you boot the XP disk in your CD, specify the installation in your other hard drive or partition.
