The goal of most mystical practices (and I'm using mystical here in the proper sense, as opposed to understanding spirits or doing magic), is to realize the true nature of reality. To do this, one must completely let go of the idea of a separate, permanent self.
The problem is that we are all trapped in a deluded state where we believe that our concepts of things are equivalent to the reality of things. The further problem is that we cannot, by act of will, understand reality.
My understanding of Satanism is that it seeks to fully accept that perfect understanding/union with god/enlightenment is, essentially an unattainable goal. That's not to say that some haven't attained it, but it is impossible to attain by trying to do so.
The path then is to fully aggrandize the self, voraciously pursue desire, and deny "god." If you read the Tao Te Ching, it talks about "negative action," attaining one's goals by doing the opposite of what would seem necessary. I speculate that the true aim is to gain enlightenment through negative action, moving toward one's goal by moving away from it.
Another thing about Satanism is it's use of duality. Hate vs. love, anger vs. forgiveness, chaos vs. order, vanity vs. humbleness, etc. To transcend duality, the Satanist tries to fully immerse himself in it, and particularly what is traditionally seen as the "negative" side of it.
I haven't known any Satanists who literally believe in Satan or God, magic, or the supernatural.
Strength to be a Satanist? It takes strength to live deeply, to immerse yourself in life and not flinch away from it, no matter what you label yourself. I've seen people of many faiths live with strength, but I admit that the vast majority of the population live life meekly and half-heartedly.

Are you 'the levey' the founder of the church of satan...or a counterfeit...oh wait...you're all a counterfeit and a mockery of the Living God and His will. i.e. the black mass = doing everything backwards; including the Lord's Prayer.
I think to belong in it is the last act of a very desperate person. I know that there's a lot of sex and rituals (and as someone said, 'I don't care who or what you put on your altar, it's an altar'.) and a worthless one at that. ..Well, I do care if it's an innocent child.
What is it about: "My will be done" !!! (as long as I am protected in my 'special circle' with my special chants and don't p^%$ off the things that I selfishly try to get to do my will, such as make me rich, famous or get revenge)....Speaking of 'that is sooooo yesterday'...and ignoble.
Yes, I know that you guys 'say' that it is gaining in popularity. Which is a sad indictment ofthe church of The Anointed One. IF it is true. But being a den of liars...well, it's hard to believe what you say.
A question for you: IF one has to be strong to be among you --- Why is that? Oh wait, C.S. Lewis answered that in 'The Screwtape Letters' it seems that you are all like the enron bunch: you 'think' you're smarter than everyone else, there are no boundaries, so, if I hurt someone, it's his/her fault and of course, there is no honor among theives. That is, just like on 'Survivor' you'll say and do anything to get your way cause all that counts is winning. Except for lots of sex, now, let me pause again...I understand that one person is the 'sacrifice' and everybody in the group gets to gang bang him/her...if that's so...eyeeeeeew....This man does not want sloppy 9ths. LOL
Which brings up another thought: What is the penalty for failure and how many times are you allowed to fail? At an assignment such as to "rob this stupid teenager of her faith" and use her body at will or, perhaps, "Get x number of people to join".... I heard long ago that the penalty is you become a SLAVE in hell; and that there is zero tolerance -- if you screw up...that's it !!!! No second chance, no compassion, no hope...
I guess one would have to be strong (or brain dead) to join a group that you can't trust, that will turn on you in a heartbeat, that will use you and spit you out without a second thought and whose only rule is: do what you will.
Thank my Good and Gracious God that He accepts me---warts, mistakes and all.

I don't really know anything about Satanism but I do know a bit about Satan. He is a fallen angel who wanted to be like God or maybe I should say wanted to BE God. As an angel, he was a created being like the other archangels, Michael and Gabriel. He does have power and but not the same power as God. He tempts, deceives, distorts, oppresses, and is determined to undermine every good thing that God has planned. He can oppress a Christian but not possess them because they have within them the spirit of God, the Holy spirit. The Bible tells me that "Greater is He that is within me, than he who is in the world". Satan's domain is this world right now. His final domain will be hell, a burning pit of torment. Hell was created for him to spend eternity in along with the other angels who left heaven with him. Sadly, there are people who will be with him there but hell was not created for people. The only people who will end up there are the ones who reject Jesus as their Savior. I would say that those people are in Satanism even though they never attend a meeting or perform any ritual. The Bible says that if you are not for Jesus, you are against Him. Any person who is not a born again Christian is anti-Christ. I imagine Satanism is gaining popularity because it gives you a broad path to go down with things to entice your natural appetites. Sin is fun....for a season. An eat, drink and be merry lifestyle always sounds like fun. I am not strong in my own self at all but I have the strength that God gives me to not get involved in anything Satanic. It frightens me to think that are those who actually worship Satan and are outspoken about it but it is even more frightening to think of all the people who are serving Satan and would never in a million years consider themselves a Satanist.

I think Satanism is okay.. It's not my choice for religion, but I know people take it really seriously and it's not all dumb and scary. My fiance has an alternative religion, and I think some of it is or has parts of Satanism. It's the same as every religion, people believe in a higher power and worship in the way they believe. I don't think people should put down Satanism just because it's different. Everyone has their right to believe what they want. I don't know if I'd be strong enough to be a Satanist. I'm learning a lot more about it through my fiance, but I don't know about it for myself.

I would respond by saying: what do people know about current Christianity? Using the bible and chosing various sides of contradictory versus to make and implement laws with? Building false churches that demoralize other people in the name of God and false idols? Re-writing the bible and excluding new documents? Executing scientists and people in the past for things that are held true today? Perhaps Satanism was associated with spilling blood, burning churches, and sacrificing animals in the past but what about Exodus? Like killing the first born children for sins that were committed by the Pharaoh? What about sacrificing lambs and spilling their blood on doors? And so on...

Satanism is popular for the same reason that mainstream hip hop and rock music is popular, it rebels against authority figures. But after you grow up its about as useful as porno mags for blind people. If I ever find myself being "strong enough" to be a satanist, I hope I'm strong enough to put a bullet in my head.

Are you ready? Satan is the mind of man turned away from God. Thats what satan is and all it ever will be. It may be in the spirit of something but it has no life of its own in fact, like the darkness it has no existence at all because it is the absence of something. It is the love of nothing, preparation for nothingness, for eternal remorse and regret. The soul of darkness will be the greatest distance from the light of the Lord of All Things. How dark is that?
You have the will and ability to act out your fantasy here on this plane but in the next life, in another dimension you will be totally impotent unless one of the living souls comes to your aid and even then....who knows. Can't imagine that you would want that. Who would. Its like I'm asking you to stand up so you can receive a million dollars but you are too rich to bother yourself to stand to take the money. I know, I know, it sounds like a gecko who advertises for an insurance company, but its true punkin. Its true and you won't find out til its too late if you continue down the road you are on.

I've done some studying of it during an online discussion I was having with a Satanist, and have checked out the websites of the Church of Satan (.com, not .org) as well as the Temple of Set.
The philosophy doesn't hold appeal for me, but I don't have a problem with people who follow the principles as they're intended.
I think LaVey did himself and his followers a disservice by choosing the name "Satanism". The momentary "Ha! Gotcha!" tweak of Christianity is outweighed by the fact that y'all have to constantly explain that you don't actually worship the Judeo-Christian entity known as "Satan".

From what I have heard, Satanists don't really worship Satan or believe in him. They just kind of like the idea of being your own God like Satan did. It's an ego thing. Either way, if it's against God, then it's evil. I'm strong enough to stay away, not weak enough to join.
May God Bless you.
